Janelle McCann scored two goals as California University defeated Slippery Rock 2-1 in the PSAC tournament quarterfinals Tuesday at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.
Fourth-seeded Cal (12-3-4) advances to the PSAC Final Four Friday at East Stroudsburg and will play the top-seeded Warriors.
The Vulcans took a 1-0 lead at 28:41 when McCann beat the Rock goalkeeper with a shot in the bottom left corner off an assist from Marissa Neifert. Slippery Rock had its best scoring opportunity in the 40th minute when a shot attempt sailed high of the crossbar.
In the second half, The Rock was unable to convert on back-to-back corner kicks near the 70th minute as Cal goalkeeper Meghan Jayes made one save. Jayes later had a save on a header at the 79:45 mark. McCann scored her second goal of the game, and 11th of the season, two minutes later by beating the Slippery Rock goalkeeper one-on-one. The Rock trimmed the deficit to 2-1 with less than three minutes when Tess Keeley scored on a header off a cross at 87:48.
