The Canon-McMillan girls soccer team’s memorable playoff run continues.
The Big Macs scored two second-half goals to complete a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Spring-Ford in a PIAA Class AAA quarterfinal game at Chambersburg High School Saturday evening.
Canon-McMillan will play Central Bucks East Tuesday at a site and time to be determined. Central Bucks East ousted WPIAL champion Seneca Valley in the quarterfinals.
“I’m absolutely very proud of the girls. They have been this way all season,” C-M head coach Dave Derrico said. “They pick themselves up when whenever we’ve lost. They fought back and in this game, we were down at halftime, they came out in the second half with so much energy and got the win.”
Canon-McMillan (18-4-1) struggled with consistency in the first half against Spring-Ford’s 4-3-3 formation, which took a 1-0 lead with seven minutes remaining in the first half. The Big Macs scrambled until halftime when an adjustment paid off.
Junior Allison Thomas was shifted behind the forwards and set up the tying goal 20 minutes into the second half. She lofted the ball past the defense to sophomore Sabrina Bryan, who connected with junior Alena Poljak on a pass to the slot. Poljak’s shot went into the net to tie the game, 1-1.
With four minutes left in regulation, senior Allison Oddi took a free kick from 25 yards out and buried it for the 2-1 lead as Canon-McMillan held on for its fifth win in its last six games.
“She started streaming the ball further up the field and she sent it to Sabrina,” Derrico said. “She then crossed it. We knew we were going to win the game. We picked up our energy and we were winning all of the balls.”
