Cal men, women open with wins

Richard Smith scored 22 points and California University held off a late rally by Johnson C. Smith to open the season with an 88-61 non-conference victory.

Jake Jacubec, with the help of 4-for-7 shooting from three-point range, finished with 18 points as Cal had four scorers in double figures. Khalil Jabbie had 17 points and Arman Marks 10.

Cal led 66-46 with just over nine minutes to play and cut it to five with 2:02 remaining on a free throw by Emilio Parks, who led Johnson C. Smith with a game-high 25 points.

A free throw by Tony Richardson with 30 seconds to play pushed the lead to six and Johnson C. Smith ran out of time.

Deiondre Pratt had 14 points and Stedmon Lemon 10 for Johnson C. Smith.

Smith had 11 rebounds and Jacubec eight assists for Cal.

Women’s results

California 81, Notre Dame 66: Emily Mahady led four California University players in double figures with 17 points during an 81-66 victory over Notre Dame (Ohio) in the season opener.

Seairra Barrett added 13 points, Irina Kukulj 11 and Paige Wright 10 for Cal. Miki Glenn had eight steals and Mahady and Lana Doran each pulled down six rebounds.

Martha Nagbe scored a game-high 19 points for Notre Dame and Kelsey Miller added 16. She also had 10 rebounds for a double-double.
