Beka Bellhy scored a game-high 23 points, Danni Medovich made three key free throws down the stretch and Valerie Dunlap blocked a last-second shot as Washington & Jefferson slipped past Kenyon 58-56 Saturday night in the first round of the Penn State Behrend tournament in Erie.
W&J (1-0) will play Rochester Institute of Technology, a 69-44 winner over the host team, in today’s championship game.
Taylor Cortazzo made a wide-open three-pointer from the left wing to give W&J the lead for good at 55-53 with 58 seconds remaining. After Dunlap blocked a Kenyon shot and the Lords missed a three-pointer, Medovich made two free throws with 28 seconds left to give the Presidents a 57-53 advantage.
Kenyon’s Sarah Hobbs made a three-pointer from the corner to trim the gap to 57-56, and Medovich made one of two from the free-throw line with 10 seconds to play, making it a two-point game. Kenyon had the game’s final possession, but Dunlap blocked a driving shot by Sidney Cera to preserve the win.
Bellhy made 10 of 15 free throws for W&J, which had five fewer field goals than Kenyon. Bellhy also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Cortazzo finished with 11 points and Medovich contributed 10.
Ifeoma Archimalo led Kenyon with 14 points.
California 78, West Liberty 68: Emma Mahady scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as California won for the second time in as many days, defeating visiting West Liberty, 78-68, in a non-conference game.
Mikki Glenn added 18 points, 10 rebounds and three steals for the Vulcans (2-0), who handed West Liberty (1-1) its first loss.
Mahady scored 13 points in the first half, but California led by only 41-39 at the break. The Vulcans pushed their advantage to double digits throughout the second half, but a jumper by West Liberty’s Kailee How with 1:52 remaining cut the Vulcans’ lead to 71-66.
Irina Kukolj, who scored 17 points, scored on a layup with 1:25 left to put Cal ahead, 73-66, and Glenn made five free throws in the closing minute to seal the victory.
Liz Flowers scored 19 points for West Liberty, which received 12 from Jasmin Kiley and 11 from Baylen Dyrland.
Carnegie Mellon 80, Waynesburg 67: Lisa Murphy scored 23 points as visiting Carnegie Mellon overcome the long-range shooting of Waynesburg and defeated the Yellow Jackets, 80-67.
Murphy made 10 of 15 shots and grabbed nine rebounds for the Tartans, who led 29-23 at halftime and pushed the advantage to double digits early in the second half.
Jackie Hudepohl scored 17 points and Lindsay Poss came off the bench to score 15 for CMU, which made 20 of 26 free throws.
Waynebsurg was led by Heather Davis, who scored 21 points and made five three-pointers. The Yellow Jackets made 11 of 30 three-pointers, but they were just 12-for-39 from inside the arc and converted only 10 of 24 free throws.
Haley Delaney had 13 points and Katie Gehlman scored 10 for Waynesburg, which was dominated on the boards. CMU outrebounded the Yellow Jackets 46-27.
Men’s results
F&M 85, Wash & Jeff 59: Morgan Lee scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to power Franklin & Marshall to an 85-59 victory over Washington & Jefferson in the first round of the F&M tournament.
W&J played without Nate Bellhy, the Presidents’ leading scorer and rebounder last year, who sat out because of an injury.
F&M shot 54 percent from the field for the game, took control early in the first half and and raced to a 43-26 lead by halftime. The Diplomats scored 50 of their points from the paint and had a 52-34 edge in rebounds.
Devin Figueroa scored 12 points, and Cedric Moune had 10 points and a game-high 16 rebounds, for F&M.
W&J was led by Mike Resnik, who scored 17 points on 8-for-14 shooting. Nick Martin followed with 14 points for the Presidents, who shot only 37 percent and converted just 10 of 24 free throws.
The Presidnets will play Bridgewater State (Mass.) in today’s consolation game.
Muskingum 70, Waynesburg 65: Logan Kimble scored 20 of his game-high 31 points in the first half and Muskingum held off Waynesburg 70-65 in the season opener at Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
Kimble, who made nine of 13 shots from the field and 10 of 12 free throws, helped the Muskies forge a 36-31 lead at halftime. Waynesburg managed only one lead in the second half, at 47-46 after a layup by Jason Propst with 10 minutes remaining. Muskingum managed to maintain a lead of no more than five points the rest of the way.
Waynesburg had a chance to tie in the final minute, but a three-pointer by Jacob Fleegle missed with 13 seconds remaining and the Muskies secured the victory by making two free throws.
Fleegle led Waynesburg with 20 points. D.J. Ritchie scored 12.
The Yellow Jackets held a 31-24 edge in rebounding, but they shot 34 percent from the field and made just three of 17 three-pointers.
Josh Glass scored 12 points for Muskingum, which shot 48 percent.
Urbana 86, California 85: Rodney Clark came off the bench to score 27 points in 25 minutes as Urbana held off California, 86-85, at the Atlantic Regional Conference Challenge at IUP.
Clark made just seven field goals, but was 13 of 15 from the free-throw line as Urbana (1-1) held on late after leading 50-32 at the half.
Urbana led 80-73 with two minutes remaining, but a three-pointer by Arman Marks with 38 seconds left pulled the Vulcans (1-1) to within 82-80.
Clark and Isaiah Phillips sandwiched a pair of free throws around a Marks layup to push Urbana’s lead to 86-82 before Jake Jacubec hit a three-pointer at the buzzer.
Jacubec led the Vulcans with 18 points. Marks, Tony Richardson and Drew Cook each had 14 points.
Mike Newton had 15 points for Urbana, which was 20-of-24 from the free-throw line.
