Denison junior guard Darius White kept hitting three-point shots and his big men grabbed rebound after rebound as the Big Red defeated Washington & Jefferson, 76-65, in a nonconference game Wednesday night.
White finished with 17 points, including five three-point field goals, and Brad Woolard had a team-high 19 points with five rebounds for Denison.
The Presidents (0-3) trailed 40-28 at halftime before scoring five straight points following the break. From there, White took over. The 5-8 point guard sparked Denison on a 14-2 run with three 3-point shots. As the Big Red (2-0) continued its offensive run, W&J’s offense went stagnant. After shooting 33 percent from the field in the first half, the Presidents went 4-for-13 in the first 10 minutes of the second half as Dension pulled away for the win.
Although W&J went on a 11-4 run in the final 2:26 seconds, it could not overcome the slow start. The Presidents were also outrebounded, 54-27, and the Big Red were led by Briggs King’s 10 rebounds off the bench. Using it size advantage, Denison scored 42 points in the lane.
Mike Resnick led W&J with 23 points, while Mitch Locher added 13 points and Jake Swan had 11 off the bench.
