Jordan Brink led six Calvin players in double figures with 19 points and the Crusaders pulled away over the final 12 minutes to defeat Waynesburg 89-70 Friday night in the Calvin Classic in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Calvin (2-0), which is ranked No. 6 in NCAA Division III, won despite a huge game by Waynesburg junior guard BJ Durham, who scored a game-high 30 points and made six three-point field goals. Durham made 11 of 17 shots, including six of 10 from three-point range.

Durham’s hot shooting helped Waynesburg (0-3) stay within striking distance in the first half. Calvin led 41-32 with less than a minute to play in the half, but Waynesburg closed with a basket by Kenny Klase and a three-pointer by Durham make it 41-37 at halftime.

Calvin, which won 24 games last season and advanced to the third round of the Division III tournament, led 59-56 after two free throws by Klase with 12:17 remaining. However, a 10-2 run pushed the Crusaders’ lead to 75-61 and the Yellow Jackets never got the deficit back to single digits the rest of the way.

Jordan Daley, who scored 18 points, had two baskets during Calvin’s key 10-2 run. Brad Visser scored 12 points, Austin Parks and Tyler Dykstra each had 11 points and Connor Vander Brug contributed 10.

Jason Propst had 10 points for Waynesburg, which shot 39 percent from the field. Calvin shot 60 percent (33-for-55) and made 15 free throws. Waynesburg was only 6-for-10 at the free-throw line.
