Glenn, Vulcans knock off nationally ranked Edinboro

For the second time in seven days, the Vulcans earned a victory over a nationally-ranked opponent Saturday afternoon, posting a 76-48 win at No. 6 Edinboro in a PSAC West game.

Sophomore guard Miki Glenn scored a game-high 20 points on six-of-eight shooting, including three three-point shots. She added four rebounds, three assists and five steals while playing all 40 minutes. The 2014 PSAC West Freshman of the Year, Glenn has scored at least 15 points in the last three games for the Vulcans (2-0, 4-0).

Seniors Emma Mahady and Irina Kukolj both reached double figures, scoring 15 and 14 points respectively.Junior Lana Doran added nine points and eight rebounds.

After the Fighting Scots (1-1, 3-1) opened the game with a basket, Cal mounted a 12-1 run and did not allow another field goal for over six minutes. Edinboro made a late charge in the first half to draw within 12 points, but the Vulcans closed the first half on a 15-1 run to take a 40-14 lead at halftime.

The Fighting Scots opened the second half with eight-unanswered points before the Vulcans went on a 7-1 run and sealed the victory behind a balanced scoring effort.

The Vulcans shot 46.8 percent form the floor and 72.2 percent from the free throw line, while Edinboro shot just 32 percent.

Waynsburg 82, Alma College 78: Senior forward Jason Propst scored 23 points to help Waynesburg to a come-from-behind, 82-78, victory over Alma College at the Calvin Classic.

The win is the Yellow Jackets’ first of the season and they accomplished the feat by shooting 43 percent from the field.

Propst led Waynesburg (1-3) to a 40-32 lead at halftime before Alma came charging back. The Scots took a one-point lead with 13:30 remaining in regulation and the two teams traded baskets until the Yellow Jackets went on an 11-2 run to take a 63-58 lead with seven minutes to go. Alma pulled to within four points, but Waynesburg made six-of-eight free throws in the final minute to complete the win.

Jacob Fleegle and Kenny Klase reached double figures with 13 and 11 points respectively. Fleggle also had 10 rebounds, two assists and two steals. Alma was led by Chase Fairchild’s game-high 24 points and Scott Nikodemski scored 23. The Yellow Jackets converted 86.5 percent of their free throw attempts and forced 18 turnovers.

: Arman Marks scored a team-high 22 points and California hit 14-of-18 free throws in the second half to hold on for a 69-63 victory over Edinboro in a PSAC West game Saturday afternoon.

The victory is the Vulcan’s first in conference play and improves their overall record to 3-2.

After leading by six points at halftime, California allowed the Fighting Scots to fight back to tie the game, 53-53, with 5:10 remaining in regulation. California went on a 5-0 run and held on with strong free throw shooting in the closing minutes.

Marks, who came off the bench, made 7 of 12 field goal attempts, grabbed 12 rebounds and made six second-half free throws. Khalil Jabbie added 14 points and Tony Richardson scored 10 for the Vulcans. Using their size, California scored 32 points in the lane and the Vulcans shot 41.9 percent from the field.

Jaymon Mason led Edinboro with 23 poitns and Henri Wade-Chatman added 15.

: Washington & Jefferson could not overcome a slow start and a solid shooting performance by Baldwin Wallace during a 77-48 loss Saturday night in a non-conference game.

The Presidents (0-4) shot just 29.6 percent from the field and their leading scorer was Mike Resnik, who finished with 10 points. The Yellow Jackets shot 36 percent and were led by three double-digit scorers. Justin Roth had a game-high 24 points. Jake Fetherolf had 11 points and 8 rebounds, while Jaron Crowe has 12 points and four rebounds for Baldwin Wallace (2-1), which started the game on a 10-0 run and never let up.

W&J trailed by nine points at halftime and kept the game at that margin until the Yellow Jackets pulled away in the final 15 minutes beind its free throw shooting. Baldwin Wallace scored 28 points off turnover, outrebounded the Presidents and had balanced scoring from its reserve players.
