Kansas edges Michigan State to win Orlando title
Perry Ellis had 17 points and nine rebounds to help No. 11 Kansas beat Michigan State 61-56 Sunday in the championship game of the Orlando Classic.
Svi Mykhailiuk added 11 points and Frank Mason III chipped in 10 for Kansas (5-1).
Michigan State (5-2) got 14 points from both Denzel Valentine and Travis Trice.
Trice’s 3 made it 59-56 with 1:36 to play. After both teams failed to score on their next possession, Jamari Traylor made two free throws in the final minute.
Kansas took its biggest lead at 54-46 on Cliff Alexander’s 3-point play with 7 1-2 minutes left.
The Spartans struggled from the floor during the first 12 minutes of the second half, making just 4 of 22 shots.
No. 1 Kentucky 53, Providence 38: Kentucky post players Willie Cauley-Stein and Karl-Anthony Towns each had 11 points and six rebounds, and the top-ranked Wildcats opened the second half with an 18-7 run to pull away for a 58-38 rout of visiting Providence.
Leading 26-22 at halftime, the Wildcats’ two platoons combined to limit the Friars to 2 of 12 shooting early in the second half.
No. 4 Duke 93, Army 73: Tyus Jones had 16 points and a season-high 10 assists, and No. 4 Duke beat visiting Army 93-73 to bring coach Mike Krzyzewski within 10 wins of 1,000 for his career.
Fellow freshman Jahlil Okafor added 21 points while Quinn Cook and Rasheed Sulaimon had 13 apiece for the Blue Devils (7-0).
No. 7 Texas 55, UConn 54: Jonathan Holmes hit a 3-pointer from the left baseline with two seconds left and No. 7 Texas beat No. 24 host UConn 55-54.
Holmes had 13 points and eight rebounds to lead the Longhorns (6-0). Demarcus Holland and Javan Felix each added 10 points.
Ryan Boatright had 24 points and seven rebounds for UConn (3-2), which lost its second consecutive game. Freshman Daniel Hamilton added 13 points and seven rebounds.
Texas led much of the way, but trailed by six after the Huskies went on an 11-1 second-half run.
No. 12 Villanova 78, Delaware 47: Kris Jenkins scored 13 points to lead five players in double figures and No. 12 Villanova cruised to a 78-47 win over visiting Delaware.
Darrun Hilliard and Daniel Ochefu each scored 12 points, and both Dylan Ennis and Phil Booth had 10 points and four assists for the Wildcats (6-0), who held the Blue Hens (0-5) to 31 percent shooting and forced them into 17 turnovers.
No. 25 Arkansas 94, Iona 77: Michael Qualls and Anthlon Bell each scored 20 points to help No. 25 Arkansas beat Iona 94-77.
Arkansas improved to 6-0 for the first time since the 1997-98 season. The Razorbacks have won 11 straight games at Bud Walton Arena.
