GROVE CITY – Running back Ryan Ruffing scored four first-half touchdowns and Washington & Jefferson College remained undefeated with a 55-14 victory over winless Grove City in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game Saturday night.

The victory moves W&J, which is ranked No. 20 in NCAA Division III, to 3-0 in the PAC and 5-0 overall. It also sets up a showdown at Bethany (4-0, 5-1) next weekend for first place in the conference. Bethany has won five in a row.

W&J wasted no time taking control against Grove City (0-3, 0-5). Ruffing scored on runs of 15, three and five yards, then caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Pete Coughlin to give W&J a 28-0 lead midway through the second quarter. Ruffing finished with 145 yards.

Less than two minutes after Ruffing’s fourth touchdown, Coughlin hooked up with Jesse Zubik for a 62-yard touchdown pass and a 35-0 lead that the Presidents had at halftime. Coughlin and Zubik connected again on a 10-yard TD pass that capped the Presidents’ opening drive of the second half and opened a 41-0 lead.

Coughlin completed 27 of 35 passes for 309 yards and three scores. Zubik caught five passes for 115 yards. Max Creighton had a big game for W&J with 13 receptions for 107 yards. The Presidents rolled up 594 total yards.

Zack Puckett had an eight-yard touchdown run and David Kincaid scored on a 17-yard scamper for the Presidents.

Grove City, which was held to 201 yards, scored two touchdowns in the final 15 minutes.
