Canon-Mac, SF boys moving on in playoffs

Canon-McMillan broke a scoreless tie at halftime with a pair of second-half goals and defeated host Norwin 2-0 Monday night in the first round of the WPIAL Class AAAA boys soccer playoffs.

Luke Maher scored three minutes into the second half to give C-M a 1-0 lead, and Alex Ablak gave the Big Macs some insurance with a goal 12 minutes later. The Big Macs (13-5-1), who advance to the quarterfinals Thursday night against Central Catholic (18-1), which advanced with a 3-1 win over Kiski. The site and time of that match will be determined by the WPIAL today.

Goalkeeper Christian Snatchko had the shutout for C-M, though Norwin’s attacking offense in the first half kept him busy.

South Fayette 2, Central Valley 0: Nick McKee scored two goals in the second half and South Fayette defeated Central Valley 2-0 in the first round of the Class AA playoffs.

The Lions (15-3-1) advance to play Ambridge (17-2), a 4-1 winner over Indiana in the quarterfinals, Thursday night.

Central Valley finishes the season with a 10-7-1 record.

McKee scored one unassisted goal and Tom Iagnemma assisted on the other score. Goalkeeper Andrew Pine stopped three outs as South Fayette outshot Central Valley 7-3.

“It was a good, hard-fought game,” said South Fayette coach Rob Eldridge. “Central Valley played a lot of guys behind the ball and tried to counterattack us. They didn’t give us much space to operate.”

In other games: Vincentian eliminated Bentworth, 5-1, and Greensburg Central Catholic knocked off Monessen 6-3 in boys Class A first-round games. No details were made available to the Observer-Reporter.
