The status of Bobby Jones as athletic director at Trinity High School appears to be in question.

The Observer-Reporter recently received information that Jones’ duties at the high school could be changing.

When Trinity principal Donald Snoke was reached at his office by phone Tuesday afternoon, he would not confirm Jones’ status as athletic director and declined to comment on the situation.

Jones, who started his career as a collegiate basketball coach and was hired as Trinity’s athletic director July 30, 2010, declined to comment on his status with the district but did say he will be taking a leave of absence.

“All I can say is that I have days to use, and I am going to take them,” Jones said. “That’s all I can comment on at this time.”

Efforts to reach Trinity superintendent Dr. Michael Lucas at his office Tuesday afternoon were unsuccessful.

The issue could come up at the next school board meeting, which is Thursday.

Jones reportedly was the second choice to take the athletic director’s job at Trinity. Charles Kiss was expected to be named to the position, but turned down the opportunity. Jones, a graduate of Western Kentucky University and a Georgia native, was a highly respected assistant coach in college basketball when he was at Pitt from 1994-97. He went on to become the head coach at St. Francis (Pa.) in 1999 before resigning in 2008.

Jones replaced Ed Dalton, who is now the athletic director and head football coach at McGuffey. Dalton served as athletic director at Trinity for 12 years before taking the new position.
