CLAYSVILLE – McGuffey senior running back James Duchi’s performance Friday night would be a good season for many players.

Duchi rushed for 248 yards and scored six touchdowns – and he did it on only nine carries – as McGuffey overwhelmed Mohawk 56-6 in a non-conference game. The 56 points is believed to tie the McGuffey single-game scoring record.

Duchi accounted for 36 of those points, and he did all his coring in the game’s first 28 minutes. Duchi scored on runs of 24, 63, 15, six, 56 and 63 yards to help the Highlanders (2-1) roll up 435 rushing yards.

Mohawk (1-2) was never in the game. The Warriors fell behind 14-6 after one quarter, then McGuffey rolled up 23 second-quarter points.

Duchi scored on a 24-yard run on McGuffey’s second offensive play of the game, then added a 63-yard scamper on its next play to make the score 14-0.

Mohawk then embarked on a 13-yard, 62-yard touchdown drive, capped by a nine-yard pass from Ricky Malutic to running back Jessie Wolfe, to pull to within 14-6. That, however, was only threat Mohawk managed as the Warriors were held to 136 total yards and an average of less than three yards per play.

The rest of the game was dominated by McGuffey’s offense, which had its third consecutive high-scoring performance.

Duchi scored on runs of 15 and six yards to make it 28-6. The latter score came one play after a long McGuffey punt return.

The Highlanders made it 30-6 when a Mohawk snap from center sailed over the punter’s head and went out of the end zone for a safety.

McGuffey quarterback Nathan Whipkey scampered 47 yards for a touchdown that made the score 37-6 with 2:53 left in the first half.

Duchi tacked on two more scores in the third quarter, rambling 56 and 63 yards as the Highlanders led 49-7 midway through the third quarter, enabling head coach Ed Dalton to clear his bench early.

Luke Shingle capped the scoring with a 15-yard run in the fourth quarter.
