The Arizona Cardinals say they first learned of the domestic abuse accusations against backup running back Jonathan Dwyer on Wednesday afternoon.

By evening, citing “the serious nature of these allegations,” the team had deactivated Dwyer from all team activities.

The quick reaction came with the backdrop of intense criticism of the NFL’s handling of a spate of such cases.

Dwyer, led to the jail in handcuffs on Wednesday, was charged with three counts, including “aggravated assault causing a fracture” involving the unidentified 27-year-old victim. He was released early Thursday after posting bond, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said.

Police said they were carrying out a search warrant of Dwyer’s residence in pursuit of more evidence.

The 25-year-old player denied committing any assault, police said.

Authorities depicted a stormy relationship between Dwyer and the woman that escalated into violence July 21, four days before the Cardinals reported to training camp.

Vick: Goodell doing “great” job: New York Jets quarterback Michael Vick says Commissioner Roger Goodell is doing “a great job” while the NFL deals with several off-field issues.

Vick says Thursday that some situations are “more complicated than others,” adding that the right decision isn’t going to be made immediately every time. The backup quarterback says Goodell needs to be given a chance “to get it right.”

Jackson sits out for Redskins: DeSean Jackson remains unable to practice as the Washington Redskins prepare to face the Philadelphia Eagles.

The three-time Pro Bowl receiver is recovering from a sprained left shoulder. He wore a white visor instead of a helmet to Thursday’s practice and sat on a stationary bike while his teammates were stretching.

Flacco back to practice for ravens: Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco has returned to practice one day after missing workouts with an illness. Flacco said he had picked up a stomach virus from his son.
