Vulcans dominate with 670 total yards

SHIPPENSBURG – One week after California generated just 389 total yards in an overtime loss to Bloomsburg, the Vulcans’ offense erupted against Shippensburg.
James Harris passed for 444 yards, setting the school’s single-game record, and two touchdowns and California had 670 total yards in a 56-34 win over Shippensburg in a PSAC game Saturday afternoon.
Kevin McCabe held the old record, 443 yards against West Chester in 2008.
Cal moves to 2-1 and 1-1 in the PSAC, which counts crossover games this season. Shippensburg fell to 2-1, including 1-1 in the conference.
Sophomore running back Nick Grissom and senior Terrell Roberson combined for 237 yards and six touchdowns, and Harris was magnificent, completing 24 of 33 passes for 444 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.
Roberson scored three times in the first half as Cal turned a 7-0 deficit into a 35-7 lead. Roberson scored on runs of 2, 1 and 5 yards and Kowan Scott caught TD passes of 3 and 46 yards. Scott caught seven passes for 139 yards and Gary Brown had game highs of 10 receptions and 190 yards.
Nick Grissom also scored three times, going over from 6, 37 and 33 yards. Grissom rushed for 139 yards on nine carries.
Shippensburg quarterback Chris Lawshe completed 30 of 52 passes for 372 yards and four touchdowns.
Lawshe’s third touchdown cut Cal’s lead to 49-28 in the second half, but Grissom put the game out of reach with a 37-yard touchdown run. Cal then blocked the Raiders’ punt on their next possession and Grissom responded with a 33-yard touchdown for a 56-28 lead.
Lawshe rushed for 72 yards on 17 carries. Trevor Harman and Sheldon Mayer each had eight receptions, Harman for 120 and Mayer for 116.
