Baseball: Waynesburg stuns 2-AA leader Brownsville

Ryan Braun went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs Saturday to lead Waynesburg to a 6-1 win upset of first-place Brownsville in Section 2-AA.

Trey Rohanna allowed one run and struck out two for the Raiders (6-3, 7-4).

Brownsville fell to 9-1 in the section and 11-2 overall.

• An 11-run fourth inning propelled Canon-McMillan to an 18-6 victory over Upper St. Clair in Section 5-AAAA.

Nick Serafino hit a solo home run for the Big Macs (5-3, 8-4). Austin Berger and Clay Martin each had a double and two RBI and Andrew Wuenstel knocked in two runs.

• Ryan Tassone hit a two-run home run and Phil Mary added four RBI as Peters Township defeated Carrick, 20-3, in a five-inning Section 5-AAAA game.

Mary went 3-for-3 with two runs and the Indians (4-5, 9-7) hit seven doubles. They scored six runs in the second and nine in the third to grab an early 15-0 lead.

Carrick (0-7, 1-8) committed four errors.

• Sam Pager doubled and drove in three runs to help Charleroi defeat Chartiers-Houston 11-4 in Section 2-AA.

Josiah Fisher, Sam Miceli and Josh Mavilla each had a double for the Cougars (3-5, 4-7).

Tyrone Wormsley had a double for C-H (3-4, 3-8).

• Jefferson-Morgan used a five-run second inning and a strong outting by Gage Clark to defeat Clay-Battelle (W.Va.), 7-2, at Consol Energy Park.

Isaac Dean went 3-for-4 with three RBI and Clark struck out three for the Rockets (5-7).

• Hunter Douglas threw a five-hitter and pitched in and out of trouble for much of the game as Fort Cherry defeated visiting South Side Beaver 8-3 in Section 1-AA.

Jake Baird had a two-run single in Fort Cherry’s five-run fifth inning, which staked the Rangers to an 8-1 lead.

Douglas struck out seven but walked nine as the Rangers improved to 3-6 in section and 4-6 overall. SSB fell to 6-3 and 7-5. The Rams had their three-game winning streak end.

Fort Cherry’s Cameron Schaub doubled and Baird drove in three run.

• New Brighton took a six-run lead and shutout into the bottom of the seventh inning, then had to hold off a furious rally by host Burgettstown before defeating the Blue Devils 6-4 in Section 1-AA.

Burgettstown took advantage of a hit batsman and five walks in the seventh, putting the tying run in scoring position before New Brighton (5-3, 5-3) got a double play and strikeout to end the game.

The winning pitcher was Justyn Francona. Losing pitcher Michael Smith struck out eight held New Brighton to four hits.

Burgettstown (2-7, 4-7) had only two hits.

• Section 5-A leader Our Lady of the Scared Heart scored in all but two innings and defeated host Avella 11-4.

Santino Paris and Cody Dobbin each hit a double for Avella (1-5, 4-6). Winning pitcher Dylan Osheka threw a five-hitter for OLSH (7-0, 10-4).
