Softball: Jefferson-Morgan gets at least share of section title

Jefferson-Morgan cracked three home runs Thursday to get past Mapletown 10-0 in a six-inning Section 1-A game.

The win assures the Rockets (9-1, 11-2) of no worse than a tie for first place with Chartiers-Houston. Head coach Tony Barbetta said it’s the fourth time in school history J-M has either won or shared a section title.

Morgan Simkovic and Morgan Gamble each hit two-run homers and Reagan Rush smashed a three-run shot to bring in the Mercy Rule. Camryn Dugan doubled and Maddie Ludrosky struck out nine and walked one.

Mapletown fell to 4-6 in the section and 7-6 overall.

• McGuffey stole 11 bases to help set up an 8-1 victory over Brownsville in a Section 2-AA game.

Sammie Weiss went 3-for-4 with a double and Megan Shultz went 3-for-4 for the Highlanders (11-1, 12-1). Moriah McGuier struck out nine and walked none.

Shelby Settles doubled for Brownsville (6-7, 6-8).

• Carmichaels set up its showdown for first place in Section 2-AA by blanking visiting Bentworth 6-0.

Carmichaels (11-1, 11-3) is tied with McGuffey for first place. The Mikes and Highlanders will play today in Claysville.

Winning pitcher Erica Burns threw a six-hit shutout with eight strikeouts against Bentworth (7-6, 10-8), which has clinched a playoff berth. Burns did not issue a walk. Losing pitcher Casey Hite struck out seven and also did not walk a batter.

Burns led Carmichaels at the plate by going 2-for-3 with two triples. Emma Lowry had the big hit for the Mikes, a two-run triple.

Micaela Panley had a double for the Bearcats.

• Peters Township took advantage of 12 errors by Upper St. Clair to come away with an 11-1 victory in a six-inning Section 4-AAA game,

Briana Smith went 2-for-3 and scored four runs for the Indians (5-6, 9-7), who had only four hits. Carly Konopka struck out nine and did not walk a batter.

Ashley Long had a double for USC (2-9, 3-11).

Samantha Wampler went 3-for-4 with a double and pitcher Jamie Schleicher struck out five as Baldwin defeated Canon-McMillan, 7-5, in a Section 4-AAAA game.

The Highlanders (9-2, 10-3) had 11 hits, including four doubles. Taylor Bruno went 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Big Macs (9-2, 11-3) and Brittney Crawford added a solo home run.

• Charleroi broke open a scoreless game with seven runs over the final three innings for a 7-1 victory over Beth-Center in Section 2-AA.

Jen Tilghman allowed just two hits for the Cougars (4-8, 5-9). Morgan Riley doubled.

Beth-Center fell to 5-8 and 5-8. Mary Gustovich had an run-scoring single.

• It took 23 days to finish but it was worth the wait for Waynesburg, which scored three runs in the bttom of the seventh for a 5-4 win over Washington in a Section 2-AA game.

The game was suspended by inclement weather in the top of the sixth inning. The second game of yesterday’s doubleheader was rained out.

Gabby Rose hit a bases-loaded single to win the game for Waynesburg (5-6, 6-10). Anissa Hopkins opened the inning with a double and Tara Staley followed with a triple before Tiffany Ross doubled. Emma Ricciuti also doubled.

Losing pitcher Taylor Ellis had a double and Maliyah Spencer doubled for Wash High (0-12, 1-13).

• Chartiers-Houston hit five triples and Kayla Alderson hit a two-run home run to defeat Fort Cherry, 14-2, in a Section 1-A game.

The Bucs (9-1, 14-2) scored seven runs in the fourth inning and sixth in the fifth to envoke the mercy rule. Alderson, Casey Craig, Megan Kraushaar and Kassie Kesneck each had two RBI to back winning pitcher Kaitlyn Dittrich, who had six strikeouts.
