Pauly wins 100th, dents Rebellion’s slim playoff hopes
Time, and opportunities, are running out for the Pennsylvania Rebellion in their chase for a playoff spot.
Sarah Pauly, who pitched for the Rebellion in their inaugural season, did the damage from the circle and accomplished a milestone in the National Pro Fastpitch League: 100 career wins. DH Nerissa Myers did it from the plate as the Akron Racers drilled the Rebellion, 6-1, Saturday night at Consol Energy Park.
The loss dropped the Rebellion to 14-31 and two games behind the Dallas Charge (16-29), who were idle last night. Dallas has three games remaining against the Chicago Bandits and the Rebellion have three games left against the Akron Racers, including today’s 2:35 p.m. first pitch.
The top four teams in the five-team league make the championship series in Hoover, Ala., which runs Aug. 14-18.
“We’re two back with three to go,” said Rebellion manager Craig Montvidas. “We can do the math. We need to win three straight.”
This game was put out of reach early as starter Miranda Kramer gave up two runs in the first inning then was pulled in the second when she loaded the bases with two outs. Haylie Wagner came in and Myers sent a laser shot over the right-center field fence to make it 6-0.
Pauly showed why she was the Rebellion’s best player last season before being traded to Akron in the spring. She allowed only one hit in five innings, struck out four and walked two. She did not allow a hit until first baseman Alisa Goler lined a single down the right field line in the fourth inning.
She said she was unaware this was the 100th victory of her career until game’s end, when teammates celebrated by smearing ice cream on her face and setting off string poppers.
“I had no idea,” said Pauly. “My mom and dad were here and so was the owner and some interns. But I don’t even think my mom and dad knew.”
While Pauly is the winningest pitcher in the league, it is impossible to know what other pitchers might be closing in because the career statistics on the NPF website only goes through the 2011 season.
Pauly began the season with 90 wins and moved her record to 10-5 with this win. It was a very typical performance, where she dominated the Rebellion. She said the win didn’t have any more special meaning because it came against her old team.
“This is probably my greatest accomplishment,” said Pauly, who said she plans to pitch next season. “I’ve been playing for a long time and 100 wins is a lot of ballgames.”
Pauly throw 67 pitches, 41 of them for strikes.
“She is like a surgeon out there,” Montvidas said. “Akron came out fired up for this game more than yesterday. They seem to score more runs for her. She throws strikes. She really shut us down.”
Notes: Attendance was 996. … Rachele Fico pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Pauly. … Rebellion catcher Kristyn Sandberg hurt her shoulder diving for a foul popup in the third inning but remained in the game. Sandberg switched to DH and Mandy Ogle came on to catch
