TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – Brandon Jacobs hit a two-run double in the fourth inning and Ian McDougall struck out seven as Traverse City defeated the Wild Things, 2-1, to complete the series sweep Thursday night at Wuerfel Park.
Washington (38-49) has lost five consecutive games and is now 20 1/2 games out of first place in the East Division. The Beach Bums (51-33) are just 5 1/2 games behind first-place Southern Illinois.
Traverse City hit back-to-back two-out singles in the fourth inning off Washington starting pitcher Jon Klein (0-1) before Jacobs, who leads the Beach Bums with a .322 batting average, drove the third pitch of the next at bat for the 2-1 lead.
The Wild Things got to McDougall early when Andrew Heck, who went 2-for-4, led off the first inning with a double. He came around to score on a single by Matt Ford. Washington got three of its six hits in the first inning, but only Heck advanced to second base.
McDougall (10-5) allowed one earned run and lowered his ERA to 2.24. Bret Dahlson and Chuck Ghysel tossed two scoreless innings to secure the win.
