Swinney, Whitehead earn individual ACC awards from ACSMA

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Clemson’s Dabo Swinney is the Atlantic Coast Conference’s coach of the year while Pittsburgh safety Jordan Whitehead is its top rookie.

The Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association on Tuesday announced the voting results for coach and rookie of the year.

Swinney received 27 of 50 votes for the coaching award to 21 for North Carolina’s Larry Fedora.

Whitehead, also picked as the defensive rookie of the year, had 19 votes to nine for teammate Qadree Ollison, a running back who won the award for top offensive rookie.

Swinney led the preseason ACC favorite Tigers (12-0, 8-0) to a No. 1 national ranking, the Atlantic Division championship and a berth opposite No. 8 North Carolina in the ACC title game.
