Men’s basketball: Chatham edges W&J for program’s first victory
Nasir Alexander’s three-point play with 1:47 remaining gave Chatham the lead for good and the Cougars went on to defeat Washington & Jefferson, 71-64, Saturday afternoon in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference basketball game at Henry Memorial Center.
It was the first victory in program history for Chatham (1-1, 1-6), which is playing its inaugural season of men’s basketball.
Washington & Jefferson (0-2, 0-7) led 33-24 at halftime but a 10-0 run by Chatham gave the Cougars a 52-45 lead midway through the second half. W&J battled back and regained the lead, but Alexander’s basket and free throw gave Chatham a 63-62 advantage. The Cougars closed the game with a 10-2 run.
Logan Hunter led four Chatham players in double figures with 13 points.
Brian Lindquist had game-highs of 17 points and 12 rebounds for W&J. Brian Graytok had 16 points with 10 rebounds, and Christian Rohaus contributed 15 points. The Presidents were hurt by 20 turnovers.
California 88, Millersville 79: Luka Andjusic scored a game-high 29 points and California University used excellent shooting from the free-throw line to defeat host Millersville 88-79 in a PSAC game.
Andjusic, a transfer from, South Alabama, made 10 of 15 shots from the field and had five of the Vulcans’ eight three-pointers. Cal led 35-26 at halftime and protected its advantage by making 28 of 32 free throws in the game. The Vulcans were 17 of 20 from the line in the second half.
Point guard Khalil Jabbie scored 15 points and made 13 of 14 free throws. Richard Smith also scored 15 points for Cal, which won its second game in as many nights.
Millersville (2-4, 2-7) made 12 three-pointers, including a 7-for-7 performance by Shawn Williams, who scored 22 points. The Marauders were led by Ricky Mosley, who scored 25 points.
Grove City 75, Waynesburg 71: Grove City made five free throws in the final 16 seconds to hold off a strong charge by Waynesburg, beating the Yellow Jackets, 75-71, in a PAC game.
The Yellow Jackets (0-2, 0-6) trailed 69-59 with 1:09 remaining in the game and cut the lead to 73-71 on a layup by Timmy Kaiser with :05 left on the clock, but Joe Vermilya made two free throws to seal the victory.
Caleb Knudesen had 22 points to lead Grove City (2-0, 5-2), which also got 11 points from Vermilya and 10 from Stephen Tam.
Grove City did not have a field goal in the ginal 3:58.
Nate Labishak had 18 points for Waynesburg, while D.J. Richie added 17, Dylan O’Hara 12 and B.J. Durham 11.
