Women’s basketball: Free throws give Cal win; W&J streak at 6

California University, ranked No. 12 in NCAA Division II, used some sticky defense and torrid free-throw shooting Saturday afternoon to win at Millersville, 57-52, in a PSAC game on the Marauders’ home court.

Cal (6-0, 7-1) won despite shooting only 29 percent from the field. The Vulcans trailed 15-7 after one quarter but outscored Millersville 37-19 over the next 20 minutes to take a 10-point lead into the fourth quarter.

The Vulcans made 14 of 15 free throws. Point guard Miki Glenn made all nine of her free-throw attempts en route to a team-high 18 points to go with six assists.

Seairra Barrett followed Glenn with 11 points and Paige Wright had 10.

Celeste Robinson scored a game-high 19 points for Millersville (2-4, 4-4).

Wash & Jeff 90, Chatham 72: Washington & Jefferson forged an early lead and was able to retain it throughout the game to post a 90-72 win over visiting Chatham in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.

With the win, the Presidents improve to 2-0 in the conference and 6-1 overall. W&J has won six in a row.

Beka Bellhy scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead W&J. Bellhy made seven of 13 shots from the field and nine of 10 free throws.

Amirah Moore, with 10 points, was the only other W&J player to score in double figures. The Presidents, who led 40-30 at halftime, had 13 different players score.

Jesse Hinkle paced Chatham (1-1, 4-2) with 13 points. Chatham had a four-game winning streak snapped.

Waynesburg 55, Grove City 43: Katie Gehlmann had 12 points and 10 rebounds as Waynesburg picked up its first PAC victory with a 55-43 win over Grove City.

Maura Bobby had a team-high 13 points for the Yellow Jackets, who won despite shooting 32 percent from the floor by holding Grove City to 23 percent shooting.

Waynesburg (1-1, 2-5) led 48-27 through three quarters and got nine rebounds each from Addy Knetzer and Heather Davis.

Kathryn Erbelding had 11 points and Teresa Dallatore 10 for Grove City (0-2, 2-4).
