Vulcans roll past Shepherd behind forward Parsons
Sophomore forward Shatara Parsons scored 15 points and grabbed a career-high 19 rebounds to help the California University women’s basketball team to a 75-59 nonconference victory over Shepherd at Hamer Hall Sunday in a matchup of NCAA Tournament teams from last year.
The 13th-ranked Vulcans improved to 8-1 and are 4-0 at home. Shepherd fell to 2-7. It was the first game in Hamer Hall since winning the NCAA Atlantic Region title in March and their first regular-season game at Hamer Hall since December 2012.
Parsons made 7 of 15 from the floor while playing a career-high 33 minutes. She is the first player to pull down 19 rebounds in a game since former All-American Kayla Smith accomplished the feat during the 2009-10 season.
Junior Precious Martin scored 14 points, had nine rebounds and five steals, sophomore Seairra Barrett tossed in 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Junior Miki Glenn and redshirt freshman Morgan Jennings each finished with 11 points. Glenn matched her season high with seven assists.
Cal opened the game on a 16-4 run after making six of its first eight shots. Back-to-back three-pointers stretched the lead to 24-8 with 2:35 left in the first quarter. Cal led 41-22 at halftime.
The Vulcans took their largest lead, 45-22, on a layup by Barrett with 8:19 left in the third quarter.
Sophomore Morgan Arden scored a game-high 18 points for Shepherd. Junior Liz Myers added a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds.
