Mapletown stuns J-M
Mapletown earned its biggest win since the program was revived four years ago when the Maples stunned traditional Class AA power Jefferson-Morgan 45-33 Wednesday night on the Maples’ mats. It is believed to be Mapletown’s first wrestling win over the Rockets in more than 50 years.
Mapletown won the match by gaining three forfeits and dominating the middle weights, putting together four consecutive wins including three by fall. Kevin Hayes (145), Brandon Smotzer (152) and Corey Dewitt (160) each won by fall, the latter two coming in the first period.
Noah Hixon also had a pin for the Maples at 113.
Jefferson-Morgan’s defending state champion Gavin Teasdale (126) needed only 16 seconds to win by fall. Trevor Kniha (170) and Billy Bowlen (195) also had pins for the Rockets.
Trinity 64, Chartiers Valley 15: Trinity dominated the light weights, stringing together five consecutive falls, and cruised to a 64-15 victory over visiting Chartiers Valley in Section 4-A of Class AAA.
After Chartiers Valley won the opening bout, Trinity used consecutive falls by Zach Magdich (160) and Dawson Leavines (170) to take the lead for good. The Hillers also received a fall by heavyweight Austin Fife, then turned things over to the lower weights, where they pulled away from the Colts.
A.D. Nelson (113), Evan Parkinson (120), Kenny Steadman (120), Ryan Yocum (132) and Michael Hertig (126) each won by fall for the Hillers. Only Parkinson and Leavines had to wrestle for more than one period to get a pin.
Fort Cherry 39, Washington 30: Fort Cherry used three falls in the upper weights to pull out a 39-30 victory over host Washington in Section 1-A of Class B.
The Rangers used a fall by heavyweight Trevor McIntyre and combined it with consecutive pins, by Austin Wod (160) and Adam Tornabene (170) in the final bout of the match to erase a 30-27 Wash High lead.
Zhaiere Patmon (145) had the only fall of the match for Washington.
Chartiers-Houston 48, South Park 34: Chartiers-Houston won eight of 14 bouts on the way to a 48-24 win over South Park in a Section 1 dual meet in Class AA.
Getting pins for the Bucs (1-1, 1-1) were Jake Ognibene (138), Dylan Briggs (152), Drew Geray (160) and Tommy Lenco (220). C-H also won the first three bouts of the meet by forfeit. South Park (0-2, 0-2) got pins from Jake Wentzel (170), Matt Blackburn (182) and Greg Bulsak (195).
Burgettstown 40, South Side Beaver 32: Burgettstown won the final three bouts to secure a 40-32 victory over South Side Beaver in a Section 1B dual meetin Class AA.
The Blue Devils (2-0, 2-0) trailed 36-25 entering the final three bouts before winning by back-to-back forfeits and Darrell Bails (160) secured the win with a 12-2 major decision. Austin Ryan (120) and Tyler Nicholson (170) got pins for Burgettstown, while PJ Smith (113) and Brad Hucik (220) also won by decision.
Joe Demora (132), Hunter Cox (182) and Kyle McGlaughlin (195) had pins for South Side Beaver.
McGuffey 53, Bentworth 21: McGuffey won 10 of 14 bouts on its way to a 53-21 win over Bentworth in a Section 2A dual meet in Class AA.
Aaron Harris (138), Austin Fisher (220) and Eddie Shingle (heavyweight) got pins for the Highlanders, who also benefited from four forfeits. Manuel Dovshek (113), Ashton Lopez (182) and Ryan Wise (195) got pins for the Bearcats.
Waynesburg 46, Moon 30: Waynesburg got six pins on the way to a 46-30 win over Moon in a Section 4A dual meet in Class AAA.
Caleb Morris (120), Shaun Wilson (138), Trey Howard (145), Terry Victor (152), Kyle Homet (160) and Colin McCracken (182) got pins for the Raiders (1-0, 5-2), who won eight of the first nine bouts.
Frankie Bonara (106), Austin McConaghy (170), Alec Yochum (160), Brendan Canerry (220) and Nathan Barcaskey (heavyweight) had pins for the Tigers.
Peters Township 49, Mount Lebanon 24: Peters Township won nine of 14 bouts, including five of the last eight, as it defeat Mount Lebanon, 49-24, in a Section 2B dual meet in Class AAA.
Shane Clark (182) started the meet for the Indians (2-0, 3-0) with a win by techinical disqualificatoin before back-to-back pins from Alex Belack and Mike McAleavey. The Blue Devils cut the deficit to six points before the PT won five of the final eight bouts. It got pins from Brandon Matthews (113) and Coltin Jezioro (126). Danny Florentino (120) also won by techincal fall and the Indians overcame four forfeits.
