Vassar’s basket gives Ringgold 45-44 victory
Junior guard Octavious Vassar made a 10-foot runner from the lane with one second remaining Friday night to give Ringgold a 45-44 victory over visiting Elizabeth Forward in Section 4-AAA.
Elizabeth Forward (0-3, 1-6) had battled back from a 23-14 halftime deficit to take a 34-33 lead after three quarters. The game remained close through the fourth quarter. Will Greijack, a 6-7 sophomore for EF, made a layup with 10 seconds remaining to give the Warriors a 44-43 lead.
Following a Ringgold timeout, the Rams tried to work the ball inside against the EF defense. With nothing open, Vassar opted to drive and made the game-winning shot.
George Martin scored a game-high 17 points for Ringgold (2-1, 5-1), which was coming off its first loss of the season, a two-point setback Tuesday at Laurel Highlands.
Dakota Browning had 12 points for the Rams, who made only nine of 21 free throws, which kept EF within striking distance. The Warriors were led by Connor Paoletti’s 15 points. Trey Mitchell scored 13 points.
Peters Township 57, Mt. Lebanon 54: Nick Valentic and Mike Cortese combined for 21 of Peters Township’s 26 fourth-quarter points as the Indians rallied and defeated host Mt. Lebanon 57-54 in Section 4-AAAA.
The win moves PT to 2-1 in the section and 5-1 overall. The Indians overcame a slow start as they scored six points in the first quarter and trailed 17-16 at halftime. Mt. Lebanon (1-2, 2-4) pushed its lead to 36-31 after three quarters, but PT came charging back behind Valentic and Cortese and built a seven-point advantage in the fourth quarter.
Valentic scored 11 of his team-high 20 points in the final eight minutes. Cortese had 18 points, of which 10 were scored in the fourth quarter.
Mt. Lebanon’s Mark Lamendola scored a game-high 26 points.
Monessen 91, Avella 24: Monessen put six players in double figures and raced to a 58-point halftime lead en route to a 91-24 victory over Avella in Section 3-A.
The Greyhounds (2-0, 5-2) won their third in a row. Monessen forged a 38-6 lead after one quarter and increased it to 66-8 at halftime.
Dwight Moore led Monessen in scoring with 21 points. Jaden Altomore and Lavalle Rush each contributed 15 points, Alan Duncan had 11 and Justice Rice scored 10.
Avella (1-2, 1-5) was led by Kevin painter with eight points. The Eagles did not attempt a free throw.
Carmichaels 60, Bentworth 31: Carmichaels had three players score in double figures as it defeated Bentworth, 60-31, in a Section 4-AA game.
Nick Mundell had a game-high 13 points, while Coty Allen and Joel Spishock both had 11 points for the Mikes (1-1, 3-2), who snapped a two-game losing streak and it was the program’s second section victory since moving up to Class AA prior to last season. Carmichaels honered its 1996 team, which won 22 consecutive games with a section championship, a WPIAL final four appearance and a PIAA elite eight appearance, during a halftime ceremony.
Nick Silver had 12 points for the Bearcats (0-3, 2-4) and Caleb Harner had 10.
West Greene 54, Mapletown 14: Freshman point guard Nathan Brudnock scored a game-high 23 points as West Greene defeated Mapletown, 54-14, in a Section 3-A game.
Craig Weaver added 12 points for the Pioneers (2-0, 4-2), who bounced back following a 50-point loss to Brownsville. The Maples (0-3, 0-6) scored two points in three of four quarters and made just two of nine attempts from the free throw line. They trailed 30-4 at halftime.
Carlynton 67, Chartiers-Houston 61: Carlynton made nine free throws and made seven three-pointers in the second half to pull away with a 67-61 win over Chartiers-Houston in a Section 3-AA game.
The Cougars (2-1, 4-2) made nine of its 10 free throws and went 56 percent from the line in the second half. They made three three-pointers in the final minutes to secure the win. Carlynton was led by Tarik Isak’s 18 points and Courtney Mickens added 16.
The Bucs (0-3, 3-4) led by two points at halftime, but were outscored 46-38 in the second half. They were led by AJ Myers’ 26 points, including six three-pointers, and Cameron Hanley had 19.
Burgettstown 77, Fort Cherry 61: Burgettstown used a 28-point third quarter to overcome a halftime deficit and defeated Fort Cherry 77-61 in a Section 3-AA game.
Max Shaw had a team-high 19 points for the Blue Devils (1-2, 2-6), while Jarred John added 11. Burgettstown trailed 34-30 at halftime before pulling away with the 28-point third quarter. The Rangers (0-3, 1-5) were led by Rob McAnany’s game-high 26 points.
Burgettstown 43, Fort Cherry 39: Burgettstown pulled away in the third quarter and held on with a 43-39 win over Fort Cherry in a non-section game.
The Blue Devils (6-2) were led by Kacie Prasko’s 14 points and Elle Havelka added 11. Burgettstown trailed 19-16 at the half before using a 16-point third quarter to grab the lead
Shannon Relihan had 19 points for the Rangers (1-6) and Hannah Greene had 16.
