Smith’s 20 points send Cal to victory
Senior Richard Smith led five players scoring in double figures to help the California University men’s basketball team to an 83-65 win over Urbana in a nonconference game at the Convocation Center Saturday evening.
Cal improved to 5-7 and Urbana fell to 1-8 after playing its first game since Dec. 5.
Smith finished with a season-high 20 points after shooting five of six from the field and 10 of 12 from the free-throw line. He also had three rebounds and four assists while playing 32 minutes against the Blue Knights. Smith is averaging 13.1 points over the last eight games while shooting 61 percent (39 of 64) from the field.
Senior Josh Dombrosky had a career-high 11 points after making all four attempts from the floor, including three from beyond the arc. The trio of sophomore Luka Andjusic, senior Khalil Jabbie and sophomore Cordell Smith each scored 10 points. Jabbie also grabbed four rebounds and had five assists, and Andjusic collected six rebounds and three assists.
The Vulcans built a 37-25 lead at halftime on a 12-6 run capped by a three-pointer by Jabbie with 22 seconds remaining. Cal eventually stretched the lead to 29 points, 74-45, on a jumper by Jabbie with 6:43 left to play.
Pitt-Greensburg 97, Waynesburg 88: Behind Mike Connelly’s 29 points, the Pitt-Greensburg men’s basketball team held off Waynesburg University, 97-88, in a nonconference game.
The game was tied 45-45 at halftime but UPG started the second half with a 10-2 run to make it 55-47. UPG’s largest lead was 71-55 with 9:13 remaining.
Connelly led all scorers with 29 points on 11 of 19 shooting. Marcus Thomas had a double-double with 17 points and 16 rebounds. Rocco Contristano finished with 24 points and five rebounds and went 9-for-9 from the free throw line. Senior Jerell Figueroa added 17 points and had five assists.
D.J. Ritchie led Waynesburg (1-7) with 21 points and B.J. Durham had 19. John Knab also hit double figures in scoring with 12 points.
