Chapman, Sanders lift McGuffey

Colin Chapman and Shaun Sanders combined for 46 points to lift McGuffey over Carlynton, 75-70, in a non-section game at Avella High School’s Washington County Stocking Stuffer Tournament Saturday afternoon.

Chapman had a game-high 26 points and Sanders had 20 for the Highlanders (4-3), who held off a fourth-quarter rally that included 31 points by Carlynton. The Cougars (4-4) were led by Ian Gallagher’s 18 points and Tarik Iask chipped in 16.

Avella 62, Freedom 51: Cody Dobbins scored a game-high 22 points, including 11 free throws, to help Avella defeat Freedom 62-51 in a non-section game at the Washington County Stocking Stuffer Tournament.

Austin Lis had 11 points and Shawn Willard chipped in 17 for the Eagles (3-5), who scored 27 fourth-quarter points and made 21 of 31 free throws. Freedom (1-7) was given three technical fouls and lost despite scoring 23 points in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs scored just 14 points in the middle quarters. Avella will face Frazier Monday at 7:45 p.m.

Frazier 70, Fort Cherry 66: Fort Cherry scored just four second-quarter points and allowed 40 in the second half as it fell to Frazier, 70-66, in a non-section game at Avella High School’s Washington County Stocking Stuffer Tournament.

The Rangers (1-7) had 29 points in the first quarter, but was held to just 15 in the middle quarters. The Commodores (4-4), meanwhile, held on with 22 in the first quarter and were led by Caleb Cox’s 23 points. Damon Lovis chipped in 21 for Frazier, which trailed 33-30 at the half. Rob McAnany had 24 points and Devon Brown 20 for Fort Cherry.

In other games, Burgettstown defeated Geibel Catholic 65-55 at Avella High School’s Washington County Stocking Stuffer Tournament. No other details were made available. Girls results

Canon-McMillan 83, Connellsville 47: Canon-McMillan forged a 19-point halftime lead and ran away with a 83-47 win over Connellsville in a non-section game at the California University Hoopfest.

Cheyenne Trest had game-high 17 points for the Big Macs (6-3), while Tamara Mathis and Kierra King both had 10. Canon-McMillan scored at least 19 points in every corner and had 41 second-half points.

Molly Bauer had 10 points for Connellsville (3-7). C-M will play Bishop Canevin today at 4 p.m.

In other games, Bishop Canevin defeated Ringgold, 63-45, in a non-section game ath the California University Hoopfest. No other details were made available to the Observer-Reporter. The Rams will face Connellsville today at 6 p.m.
