Second-quarter run lifts Indians
PITTSBURGH – Madison Kerr scored seven of her team-high 16 points during a 22-0 fourth-quarter run as Peters Township blew open a close game for a 61-25 victory over Our Lady of Sacred Heart in the opening round of the Keystone Oaks high school girls basketball tournament Monday night.
The Indians (8-1) led just 16-14 after one quarter, but their press continued to wear down OLSH (7-2). PT went on an 11-2 run in the second quarter and then held OLSH scoreless in the fourth period to walk away with the victory.
Makenna Marisa added 13 points for the Indians, while Alyssa Konopka had 12 points. PT will play host Keystone Oaks in today’s championship game.
Courtney Alexander led OLSH with 12 points.
McGuffey 60, Fort Cherry 34: Katie Demi’s 22 points helped the host Highlanders defeated Fort Cherry, 60-34, at the McGuffey Tournament.
McGuffey (2-7), which jumped out to an 18-3 lead, will play Brownsville in the championship game at 8 p.m.
Hannah Greene scored 19 points to pace Fort Cherry (2-7) will face Washington in the consolation game at 6 p.m.
Brownsville 60, Washington 45: Keyona McCrae had 20 points to lead Brownsville to a 60-45 victory over Washington in the opening round of the McGuffey Tournament.
Allie Seto added 17 points and Maris Seto had 16 for Brownsville (8-2), which also defeated Washington (6-3), 44-41 earlier this season.
Tajah Gordon scored 22 points and Mikayla Maltony added 10 for Washington.
Brentwood 65, Charleroi 55: Brentwood had four players score in double figures and it used a 24-point third quarter to defeat Charleroi 65-55 in a non-section game at California Area High School’s holiday tournament.
Molly Huffman had 16 points, Stephanie Thomas 15, Morgan Dryburgh 13 and Alecia Folina 10 for the Spartans (6-2), who pulled away with 40 points in the second half.
Maria Claybaugh had 18 points for the Cougars (7-1) and Kaitlyn Riley added 17. The Cougars will face Sewickley Academy today at 3 p.m.
Carmichaels 53, Monessen 34: Carmichaels led by 20 points at halftime and held on for a 53-34 win over Monessen at the California Tournament.
Gina Ranieri led the Mikes (4-5) with 18 points and Kristina Aeschbacher had 12. Natalia Holmes had 18 points for the Greyhounds (1-7). The Mikes will face California tonight at 7:30 p.m., and Monessen will play South Allegheny at 4:30 p.m.
California 51, South Allegheny 17: Bailey Vig had 20 points and California allowed just two points in the first half on its way to a 51-17 win over South Allegheny at the California Tournament.
Jenna Miller added nine points for the Trojans (5-3), who led 29-2 at halftime and will face Carmichaels tonight at 7:30 p.m. Sydney Kirkwood had six points for the Gladiators (2-6).
Southmoreland 65, Waynesburg 33: Olivia Porter’s 33 points led Southmoreland past Waynesburg, 65-33, in the first round of the Geibel Tournament.
Julea Claycomb added 11 points for Southmoreland (5-4), which will play Propel Andrew Street in today’s championship (6:30 p.m.).
Celine Monica’s 12 points led Waynesburg (3-5) which faces Geibel at 5 p.m. in the consolation game.
Ellis School 50, West Greene 46: Diana Rouse scored 16 points and Ellis held off a strong fourth-quarter push by West Greene to beat the Pioneeners, 50-46, in the opening round of the Bentworth Tournament.
West Greene (7-2), which trailed by 11 entering the fourth quarter, cut the lead to two points in the closing minutes, but missed a pair of free throws before Ellis (7-0) made two to close things out.
McKenna Lampe led the Pioneers with 18 points. West Greene will play Bentworth at 5 p.m. in the consolation game, while Ellis will face Mapletown in the championship game.
Mapletown 39, Bentworth 34: Mapletown allowed just two points in the second quarter and held off a second half rally on its way to a 39-34 win over Bentworth at the Bentworth Tournament.
Alicon Clark had 10 points for the Maples (2-7), who snapped a three-game losing skid despite making just 8 of 21 free throws. They will face The Ellis School tonight at 6:30 p.m.
Heather Chester had 19 points for the Bearcats (2-7).
In other games, South Fayette defeated Gateway, 46-32, at the Bethel Park Tournament. The Lions will face the host team tonight at 8 p.m.
