Small college basketball: Poor shooting proves costly to W&J, Waynesburg

Thayne Recker scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead host Bluffton to a 77-55 victory in the first round of the McDonald’s Classic.

Recker made eight of 11 shots from the field and had two assists for Bluffton (7-2).

The loss kept W&J (0-9) winless.

Bluffton used a 13-2 run late in the first half to open a 46-25 lead. The Beavers extended their advantage with an 11-2 spurt early in the second half.

Gianni Buarne led W&J with 13 points, Brian Graytok had 12 and Wengly Saintlouis 10. The Presidents, who will play Illinois College in the consolation game today, shot only 35 percent from the field.

Catholic 71, Waynesburg 42: Jay Howard scored 19 points and Catholic defeated cold-shooting Waynesburg 71-42 in the opening round of the Catholic University Tournament in Washington, D.C.

Catholic (7-3) closed the first half with a 16-4 run to open a 36-15 lead, then put together an 11-1 run early in the second half.

Waynesburg (1-8) made only five of 23 shots (22 percent) in the first half and shot 24 percent for the game. Jan Knab scored 14 points and was the only Yellow Jackets player in double figures. Waynesburg will play either Williams or Ursinus in the consolation game Wednesday night.
