Second-half surge sends Waynesburg women to victory
Waynesburg took advantage of 20 turnovers and a poor shooting performance by Pitt Greensburg in a 78-51 non-conference win Wednesday at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
The Bobcats (4-6) shot just 22.8 percent from the field – missing all eight of their attempts from three-point range – and made just 13 field goals, receiving most of their offense from 25 free throws. The Yellow Jackets (4-6) were led by sophomore forward Addy Knetzer, a Chartiers-Houston High School graduate, who had 12 points and six rebounds. Waynesburg had 13 different players score with 39 points from its bench and made nine three-pointers. It also had 24 points off turnovers and held Pitt Greensburg to just five points in the second quarter.
Holding a five-point halftime lead, Waynesburg scored 49 in the second half to secure the win. The Bobcats were led by Sylvia Stuart’s 15 points.
Washington & Jefferson 74, Marietta 64: Washington & Jefferson’s third-quarter run propelled the Presidents to a 74-64 win over Marietta in a non-confernece game at Ban Johnson Arena.
Tied 37-37 at halftime, the Pioneers (9-3) started the third quarter on a 6-0 run, but Washington & Jefferson answered with an 20-7 run – sparked by two three-pointers by Taylor Cortazzo, who finished with a team-high 21 points and five three-pointers. Amirah Moore added 20 points and Beka Bellhy 16 for the Presidents (8-2), who made 20 of 24 free throws and scored 27 points in the quarter.
Marietta shot just 36 percent from the field and was led by Amisha Herd’s 14 points.
