Duke blows out Notre Dame; Arizona upset
Justise Winslow and Jahlil Okafor put the D back in Duke and ran Notre Dame off the floor.
Winslow had 19 points and 11 rebounds, and the fourth-ranked Blue Devils used a huge early run to rout No. 10 Notre Dame 90-60 Saturday.
Okafor added 20 points and 10 rebounds. Matt Jones had a career-high 17 points off the bench, and Tyus Jones scored 12 for the Blue Devils (20-3, 7-3 Atlantic Coast Conference).
They shot 61 percent 81 percent in the first half and used an early 43-7 run to avenge their recent loss and give Notre Dame (21-4, 9-3) its worst loss since 1999.
“Everyone,” forward Amile Jefferson said, “was hungry today.”
Steve Vasturia had 15 points but top scorer Jerian Grant was held to just seven on 3-of-10 shooting for the Fighting Irish, who won the previous meeting 77-73 Jan. 28.
This rematch was all Duke.
Playing before a crowd infused with an energy usually reserved for rival North Carolina, the Blue Devils clamped down on the nation’s most efficient offense and built an insurmountable lead during what coach Mike Krzyzewski called “the best half we’ve played this season.”
“We have not executed that way in a long time on both ends of the court,” Krzyzewski said. “It was almost perfect.”
A comeback-capable Notre Dame team the Irish rallied from 18 points down to beat North Carolina State on the road two weeks ago never got closer than 18 in the second half of its worst loss since Villanova beat them 93-62 Jan. 7, 1999.
Arizona State 81, No. 6 Arizona 78: Bo Barnes scored 18 points, including a key 3-pointer late, and Arizona State pulled off a second straight home upset over Arizona, 81-78.
No. 7 Villanova 69, No. 24 Georgetown 53: Darrun Hilliard scored 15 points and Josh Hart had 13 to help Villanova avenge its worst game of the season with a 69-53 victory over Georgetown.
Oklahoma State 67, No. 8 Kansas 62: Le’Bryan Nash scored 18 points to help Oklahoma State upset Kansas, 67-62.
No. 11 Iowa State 75, Texas Tech 38: Jameel McKay scored 17 points on 7-for-7 shooting in his first start and keyed a strong defensive effort for Iowa State that produced a 75-38 win over Texas Tech.
No. 12 North Carolina 79, Boston College 68: Isaiah Hicks scored 21 points, Brice Johnson had 20 points and 10 rebounds and North Carolina beat Boston College, 79-68, to snap a two-game losing streak.
St. Bonaventure 73, No. 18 VCU 71: Marcus Posley scooped in a 6-footer off the backboard at the buzzer, lifting St. Bonaventure over injury-depleted VCU, 73-71.
No. 21 Oklahoma 68, TCU 56: Ryan Spangler scored 21 points in Oklahoma’s 68-56 victory over TCU. Buddy Hield added 16 points and 10 rebounds for Oklahoma.
No. 22 Butler 83, DePaul 73: Kellen Dunham hit four 3-pointers and scored 24 points for Butler in an 83-73 win over DePaul.
No. 25 Texas 61, Kansas State 57: Isaiah Taylor scored 23 points, including two free throws with a second left, in Texas’ 61-57 victory over Kansas State.
