The resurgence of the California University men’s basketball continued Wednesday night as the Vulcans defeated PSAC West Division co-leader East Stroudsburg 72-63 at the Convocation Center.

Head coach Bill Brown’s Vulcans improved to 7-3 in the West Division and 11-4 overall. The Vulcans have won four in a row.

Cal raced to a 14-point lead late in the first half, then withstood several surges by East Stroudsburg (7-3, 8-5) over the final 20 minutes. The Vulcans held East Stroudsburg, which entered the game leading the PSAC in scoring, to only 24 first-half points.

East Stroudsburg did take a 49-47 lead following a three-pointer by Jamal Nwaniemeka with 10:05 remaining, but a layup by Calvin Brown tied the score and Richard Smith put the Vulcans ahead for good with a dunk. The baskets triggered a 10-1 run.

California used a balanced attack with four players scoring in double figures, led by freshman forward Tony Richardson’s 14 points off the bench. Jake Jacubec scored 11 points, Smith had 10 and Khalil Jabbie scored eight of his 10 points in the second half. The Vulcans made 12 of 14 free throws, including all nine they attempted in the second half.

Nwaniemeka led East Stroudsburg with 13 points.

Saint Vincent 71, Waynesburg 60: Jaylon Bell, a transfer from NCAA Division II St. Leo, scored a game-high 19 points and Presidents’ Athletic Conference leader Saint Vincent defeated visiting Waynesburg 71-60.

Waynesburg (2-2, 6-7) led 21-17 before Saint Vincent (4-0, 9-4) closed the first half with an 11-1 flurry to take the lead for good at 28-22. Sparked by Bell, who had three first-half fouls, the Bearcats pulled away over the second half.

Waynesburg did pull to within 32-27 after three free throws by B.J. Durham, but Saint Vincent answered with consecutive three-pointers and later went on a 12-2 run to open a 52-35 advantage.

Jacob Fleegle led Waynesburg with 13 points and Durham scored 12.

Geneva 78, Wash & Jeff 70: Geneva used a 20-point performance by Ethan Adamczyk and some torrid free-throw shooting to edge visiting Washington & Jefferson 78-70 in a PAC game.

Geneva (3-2, 6-8) made 21 of 24 free throws, including 18 of 21 in the second half.

Mike Resnik had another big game on the offensive end for W&J (0-4, 1-12), scoring 21 points on 7-for-14 shooting. Mitch Locher scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds. Tyler Haas had 11 points.

Chaese Vaudrin scored 14 points for Geneva and made 12 of 15 free throws. Jordan Lawrence had 11 points.

Women’s results

California 71, East Stroudsburg 62: Emma Mahady, who was held scoreless in a loss Sunday at Bloomsburg, rebounded by scoring 24 points to lead California to a 71-62 victory over East Stroudsburg in a PSAC crossover game at the Convocation Center.

Mahady scored 15 of her points in the first half, when Cal (9-1, 12-2) forged a 38-22 lead. California increased its lead to 20 points early in the second half, but East Stroudsburg (4-6, 5-9), which received a game-high 28 points from Jessica Martin, closed to within 66-58 with 2:41 remaining.

The Warriors could draw no closer as Mahady made two free throws and Irina Kukolj, who scored 17 points, had a layup down the stretch to help the Vulcans remain undefeated at home against PSAC opponents.

Miki Glenn scored 10 points for Cal and Lana Doran had nine rebounds.

The Vulcans host undefeated IUP (13-0) Saturday.

Wash & Jeff 67, Geneva 42: Washington & Jefferson bounced back from its first PAC loss with a 67-42 victory over host Geneva.

The Presidents (4-1, 10-2) shot only 24 percent in the first half, which ended with W&J leading 25-16. The second half was much better for W&J as the Presidents scored 42 points and cruised to its fourth win in as many road games.

Beka Bellhy led W&J with a game-high 21 points that came on 8-for-11 shooting. All of Bellhy’s points came in the second half after she got into early foul trouble. Taylor Cortazzo, with 11 points, was the only other W&J player in double figures. The Presidents used 16 players and 12 were in the scoring column.

W&J led 18-16 before closing the first half with a 7-0 run, then pulled away with a 17-4 run midway through the second half.

Nicole Hyland led Geneva (1-4, 3-9) with 10 points. The Golden Tornadoes shot only 27 percent.

W&J hosts PAC co-leader Thomas More Saturday afternoon (3 p.m.). The Saints are ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division III.

Saint Vincent 85, Waynesburg 73: Taylor Mathers scored a game-high 26 points and hot-shooting Saint Vincent remained tied for first place in the PAC with an 85-73 victory over visiting Waynesburg.

Saint Vincent (5-0, 11-1) won its fifth consecutive game. The Bearcats shot 52 percent from the field and had five players score in double figures.

Waynesburg (1-3, 4-7), which made 15 three-pointers Saturday in an upset of Washington & Jefferson, made 10 more from behind the arc and outrebounded Saint Vincent 46-32, but the Yellow Jackets couldn’t overcome their 22 turnovers.

Waynesburg cut a double-digit Saint Vincent lead to 38-31 at halftime, then drew to with 42-38 early in the second half after a layup by Haley Delaney. The Bearcats, however, went on an 8-0 run and Waynesburg never got closer than eight points the rest of the way.

Heather Davis and Rebecca Kerr each scored 14 points for Waynesburg. Lauren Blair contributed 10 points.
