4-AA leader Charleroi rallies past Frazier

John Arnold scored seven of his 23 points in the decisive fourth quarter as Charleroi rallied past Frazier, 56-51, in a Section 4-AA boys game Tuesday night.

Charleroi (7-1, 9-6) trailed 38-36 entering the fourth quarter, but outscored visiting Frazier (4-4, 7-8), 20-13, in the fourth quarter.

Sam Miceli added 12 points for the first-place Cougars, including going 6 for 6 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter.

Alvin Ross led Frazier with 19 points, while Caleb Cox added 11.

Washington 84, Fort Cherry 39: DeQuay Isbell had 19 points to lead a balanced scoring attack as Washington dominated the first half and came away with an 84-39 Section 3-AA win over Fort Cherry in a Section 4-AA game.

Nathan Swart added 18 points, Markel Pulliam 14 and Matt Popek 12 for Washington (7-2, 9-6), which built a 54-16 lead through two quarters.

Rob McAnany scored 16 points for Fort Cherry (2-7, 3-13).

Burgettstown 53, Brentwood 42: Hunter Lecker scored a game-high 16 points and Burgettstown’s playoff chances improved with a 53-42 victory over visiting Brentwood in Section 3-AA.

Burgettstown (4-5, 7-9) began the night tied with Chartiers-Houston and Brentwood for fourth place and the final playoff spot out of the section. The Blue Devils led 29-24 at halftime and pulled away down the stretch by outscoring Brentwood 13-6 in the fourth quarter.

Dylan Dhans scored 10 points for Burgettstown and Jacob Shipley had a double-double by scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

Mark Wells paced Brentwood (3-6, 4-11) with 14 points and Conner McWilliams had 10.

Chartiers Valley 69, Canon-McMillan 56: Chartiers Valley used 25 points from Eddie Flohr to overcame a halftime deficit and defeat host Canon-McMillan 69-56 in Section 4-AAAA.

The win keeps CV (7-1, 12-2) a half-game behind section-leader Mt. Lebanon. Canon-Mac (2-6, 7-9) came out hot from three-point range and built a 41-37 halftime lead. The Big Macs, however, went cold from the field in the second half and scored only 15 points over the final 16 minutes.

Matty McConnell, who scored 54 points in the Colts’ last game, had 20. Jake Ritson scored 13.

Britton Beachy had a big first half for C-M and finished with 18 points. R.J. Bell made four three-pointers and had 16 points, and Sam Bohn contributed 14 points.

Laurel Highlands 65, Ringgold 59: David Rusko scored five of his team-high 17 points in overtime as Laurel Highlands defeated visiting Ringgold, 65-59, in a key Section 4-AAA game.

Ringgold (2-7, 5-10) trailed 48-38 after three quarters but mounted late charge to force overtime. The Rams used its defense to force LH turnovers and tie the score. The Mustangs (5-4, 10-7) played for the final shot of regulation but missed a three-pointer that was rebounded by the Rams. Ringgold’s Nico Law raced up court missed a floater from the lane as time expired.

Anthony Pampena led Ringgold with 17 points. Law scored 15 and George Martin had 14. Jake Swartz scored 13 for LH.

California 62, Avella 37: Hot-shooting California made 12 three-point field goals en route to a 62-37 victory over Avella in Section 3-A.

Tray Matthews led four California players in double figures with 17 points and three baskets from three-point range. Kass Taylor followed with 16 points, K.C. Zajicek had 14 and John DeFranko 12.

Avella (1-7, 1-16) was paced by Brandon Miller, who scored 11 points.

Beth-Center 52, West Greene 50: Beth-Center built an 11-point halftime lead, then held off a late charge by host West Greene to defeat the Pioneers 52-50 in a non-section game.

The win moved Beth-Center (7-7) to the .500 mark. The Bulldogs led 32-21 at halftime but West Greene (5-11) battled back behind Kolton Rush (13 points) and Bray Jackson (10 points). B-C need two free throws in the closing seconds to push its lead to 52-47 before West Greene make a three-pointer just before the final buzzer.

Bradey McDonnell led B-C with 16 points and Ryan Beyer followed with 15.

Montour 53, McGuffey 50: Montour used a big second quarter and 24 free throws, many in the fourth quarter, to hold off host McGuffey 53-50 in Section 5-AAA.

After the first quarter ended tied at 7-7, Montour (5-2, 7-8) outscored the Highlanders 18-4 to take a 14-point lead into halftime. McGuffey (2-6, 6-10) closed to within 34-27 after three quarters, but Montour held on by making 24 of 35 free throws over the course of the game.

K.J. Rhodes led the Spartans with 15 points and Mike Buter had 11.

Damian McCloskey of McGuffey was the game’s leading scorer with 16 points. Zach Maxwell contributed 13 points.

Bethel Park 72, Peters Township 63: Bethel Park went on a 24-7 second quarter run en route to a 72-63 Section 4-AAAA win over Peters Township.

Levi Metheny had 17 points, Joe Mascaro 15 and Anthony Bomer 10 for the Black Hawks (6-2, 10-5), who led 42-20 at the half.

Tim Swoope scored 23 points and Ben Doyle had 13 for Peters Township (2-7, 6-9).

South Park 77, Trinity 44: Justin Gourney scored 22 points as South Park cruised to a 15-3 lead in a 77-44 Section 5-AAA win over Trinity.

Harry Zaremba added 13 points, Shawn Cooleghan 12 and Dan Wanker 10 for South Park (5-3, 11-6).

Joey Koroly scored 14 points to lead Trinity (3-5, 6-9).

Monessen 89, Jefferson-Morgan 40: Dwight Moore and Justice Rice scored 17 points each as Monessen topped Jefferson-Morgan, 89-40, in Section 3-A game.

Lavalle Rush chipped in 15 points, Jaden Altimore 12 and Noah Rullo 11 for Monessen (7-0, 10-5), which led 72-33 after three quarters.

Rece Henneman and Austin Clark had 12 points each for Jefferson-Morgan (3-5, 8-7).

Seton-La Salle 87, Chartiers-Houston 62: Behind four double-digit scorers, Seton-La Salle went on a 31-9 run in the second quarter and cruised to a 87-62 victory over Chartiers-Houston in a Section 3-AA game.

Ryan Norkus led the Rebels (8-1, 13-2) with 19 points. He was joined in double figures by Christian Del Greco (17 points), Paris Ford (13) and John Marzina. The Bucs (3-6, 8-9) trailed by four points at the end of the first quarter, but Seton-La Salle pulled away with a 31-point second quarter. Chartiers-Houston outscored the Rebels by 12 points in the fourth quarter, but could not overcome the early deficit.

Alec Ferrari had 26 points and AJ Myers added 16 for the Bucs.

Girls results

Jefferson-Morgan 37, Fort Cherry 26: Jefferson-Morgan outscored visiting Fort Cherry 16-4 over the final quarter and rallied to beat the Rangers 37-26 in Section 3-A.

The win keeps Jefferson-Morgan (8-1, 14-1) one game behind section leader California. The Rockets have won four in a row but had to come from behind to beat Fort Cherry. J-M led 16-7 after one quarter, then was held to just five points over the middle quarters and trailed 22-21 entering the final stanza.

The Rockets scored 12 of their 16 fourth-quarter points from the free-throw line, where they were 17-for-26 on the night. Fort Cherry (5-4, 5-9) made only six of 16 free throws and committed 32 turnovers.

Junior guard Nicole Venick led J-M with 13 points and Ally Bogden contributed 10 points.

Fort Cherry had only three players who scored, but Hannah Green had a game-high 14 points and Tina Bellhy followed with 11.

Bentworth 42, Waynesburg 21: Playing against Waynesburg seems to bring out the best in Bentworth’s Grace Marchezak.

Marchezak scored a game-high 20 points and led Bentworth’s second-half charge as the Bearcats defeated the visiting Raiders 42-21 in Section 4-AA. Marchezak had scored 22 points in Bentworth’s first meeting with Waynesburg.

Bentworth (3-5, 8-7) led 15-9 at halftime, then took control of the game by outscoring the Raiders 17-6 in the third quarter.

Kellie Taylor led Waynesburg (0-8, 2-11) with seven points and Celine Monica grabbed 14 rebounds.
