Local team fares well at national 4-H tournament

Team Pennsylvania won the 3-position smallbore championship and the overall silver medal at the 3-day 2015 4-H Shooting Sports Inviational at Grand Isle, Neb., recently.

The gold medal in the three-position portion of the shoot was the fifth in seven trips to the national tournament for the Pennsylvania team, which is largely made up of shooters from the Frazier-Simplex Rifle Club.

Team Pennsylvania, led by Zach Nicolella’s second-place finish, was second out of 24 teams competing in the overall smallbore portion of the event.

Kansas won the team title with 80 points, while Pennsylvania finished second at 65.

Pennsylvania placed seventh in the three-position air rifle shoot on the opening day, as Grace Lengauer was 20th overall to lead the way.

Langauer finished 10th overall and Hunter Moore 24th on the second day in the standing air rifle tournament as Pennsylvania finished sixth in the team standings.

In the three-position smallbore shoot, Nicolella finished fifth, while Mackenzie Wagner was eighth and Kaylee Hobgood 22nd to help Pennsylvania win the third day’s event with a score of 1,598.

Pennsylvania finished seventh in the air rifle silhouettes on the final day, as Lengauer was 11th and Moore 16th.

The seventh-place finish helped Pennsylvania finish ninth overall in the team standings.

The team received a large contribution from the Claysville Sportsmen’s Club to help defray the costs of the trip.
