Wobrock, Helisek to play in All-Star game
The Washington Wild Things will be represented on the East Division roster in the Frontier League All-Star Game in two weeks by shortstop Austin Wobrock and pitcher Kyle Helisek.
The game will be played at Schaumburg, Ill., July 15.
Wobrock, a slick fielder, is batting .266 this season, his second with the Wild Things. Wobrock was signed late last season after starring at the University of Hawaii.
Wobrock hasn’t made an error this season in 51 chances.
Helisek, a lefty who was signed by the Wild Things April 21, is a graduate of Seneca Valley High School and was a 30th round draft pick of the St. Louis Cardinals in 2012.
In six starts, Helisek has a 1.95 ERA, good for sixth in the league, and a 4-2 record. He has compiled 31 strikeouts in 37 innings.
Helisek played collegiately at Villanova.
Two players perhaps overlooked from Washington’s roster were outfielder David Popkins and starting pitcher Matt Sergey.
Popkins is tied for the league lead with 12 home runs this season despite a .218 batting average.
Sergey, meanwhile, is 3-3 with a 2.33 ERA and ranks third in the Frontier League with 59 strikeouts.
