Waynesburg University added six recruits to the basketball program, including a point guard from Connellsville High School in Avery White.
The five joining White are Clay Carper, a 6-2 guard from Lutheran West High School in Rocky River, Ohio; Nate Gearhart, a 6-3 guard-forward from Huntingdon; Glen Hoffman, a 6-3 guard-forward from Heartland Christian School in Columbiana, Ohio; Dylan O’Hara, a guard from Girard (Ohio) High School; and Brennan Smith, a 6-5 forward from Oak Glen High School in New Cumberland, W.Va.
“We are excited to welcome this group to Waynesburg and specifically our men’s basketball program,” said Yellow Jackets head coach Mark Christner. “These young men have the character and ability to impact our program in a very positive direction immediately. Our versatility, overall depth and length have been improved with the addition of each of these individuals.”
Carper comes from the same school – Lutheran West – that produced Adam Moses, an All-America tight end for the Yellow Jackets football team. Gearhart led his team to the District 6-AAA playoffs and finished with more than 1,000 points at Huntingdon.
Hoffman also surpassed 1,000 points and averaged 23.7 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game – all team highs – as a senior.
O’Hara was named the Trumbull County Boys Basketball Player of the Year after averaging 19.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.4 steals per game as a senior. He led the Indians to a conference championship and a spot in the district title game. O’Hara ended his high school career with 1,003 points.
Smith scored a school-record 41 points in a playoff game and was named second team All-State in Class AA. Avery helped the Falcons to a 5-17 record last season.
