McKenzie sentenced to 15 days in Va. jail
Shai McKenzie, a running back for Virginia Tech and former standout at Washington High School, was sentenced to 15 days in jail and 50 hours of community service Thursday after being found guilty of having consensual sex with a minor by the Montgomery County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court.
According to media reports, McKenzie, 19, is scheduled to report July 17 to Montgomery County Jail. McKenzie, who is suspended indefinitely from Virginia Tech’s football program, was charged with two misdemeanor counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor after he was accused of having sex with a 15-year-old girl in February.
According to a search warrant filed in Montgomery County Court, McKenzie and Devin Gavion, a Virginia Tech student, arranged a meeting with two teenage girls at a home in Christianburg on or about Feb. 15 after meeting them through social media. Four condoms were recovered from the residence where one of the juveniles state she placed them. The university’s student conduct committee cleared McKenzie of any wrongdoing at a hearing in March.
McKenzie appeared in five games as a freshman for the Hokies last fall, rushing for 279 yards and three touchdowns before tearing his ACL during a 25-17 win over Western Michigan Sept. 27. Wash High’s all-time leading rusher, McKenzie finished his high school career with 4,856 yards.
