Wild Things split DH
ROCKFORD, Ill. – David Popkins homered to tie the game and Matt Peters followed with an RBI double in the top of the seventh inning to help Washington earn a split of a Frontier League doubleheader Sunday with Rockford, 2-1.
Rockford won the second game, 5-2.
The late-game heroics in the opener made a winner of Luke Wilkins, who improved to 4-2 by allowing six hits and striking out five for Washington (23-28).
Kyle Hassna (6-1) took a two-hit shuout into the final inning for West Division-leading Rockford (30-19) until Popkins’ homer, his 15th of the season.
In the nightcap, Anthony Renteria had a two-run double for Rockford, while the Wild Things were held scoreless until Popkins, who had three hits in the second game, hit his second homer of the day to make it 5-2.
Popkins’ homers moved him into a tie with River City’s Taylor Ard for the league lead at 16 heading into the All-Star break.
Sam Mende also had three hits in the second game for Washington.
Ernesto Zaragoza took the loss, allowing for runs, three of which were earned, in 3 2/3 innings.
