The Washington & Jefferson women’s basketball team will play international competition for the first time in the program’s history when it travels to Costa Rica next week.

“We are extremely excited to have the opportunity to travel to Costa Rica with our team,” said W&J head coach Jina DeRubbo.

NCAA Division III athletic programs are allowed one foreign tour every three years. The foreign tour must take place during a vacation period.

This year’s trip, which will span Aug. 2-10, features a trio of games as well as the Presidents conducting a pair of free youth sports clinics.

“While there, we will have the privilege of conducting two free clinics for underprivileged children,” said DeRubbo, who will begin her 12th season at W&J. “We will spend time seeing different parts of the country: the rainforest, beach and one of their National Parks. Our players have been looking forward to the trip and for many it will be their first time out of the country.”

Aside from the basketball-related obligations, other activities for the travel party include: zip-lining, visiting the beach and National Park at Manuel Antonio, as well as several meals allowing the group to sample local cuisine.

Fans will be able to follow the team through multiple channels as senior Ashley Mikelonis will be contributing a running diary of the trip from a student-athlete perspective for gopresidents.com.
