Robinson envisions big role with Jags

Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Allen Robinson spent last season looking for a niche.

Cecil Shorts III was the veteran of the receiving corps. Marqise Lee was the higher-drafted rookie. Allen Hurns was the team’s biggest surprise.

Robinson was somewhat lost in the mix, especially after missing most of organized team activities, training camp and the preseason with a hamstring injury and then ending up on injured reserve for the final six weeks with a broken right foot.

His first year was mostly forgettable. His second one looks to be much more memorable.

The former Penn State standout has been the star of Jacksonville’s offseason program, showing big-play ability all over the field and most noticeably in and around the end zone.

“He’s been unbelievable,” quarterback Blake Bortles said as the Jaguars wrapped up a mandatory, three-day minicamp.

Peterson finds new normal with Vikings: Adrian Peterson has been back with the Minnesota Vikings for nearly a month now. He’s participated in practices, including the three-day minicamp that wrapped up on Thursday.

But Peterson says his life has not returned to normal since he was charged with child abuse last September. Peterson missed most of last season while addressing the accusation and tangling with the NFL over his punishment. He pleaded no contest to resolve the case.

The Vikings broke minicamp on Thursday and will have about five weeks off before starting training camp toward the end of July.

Peterson says he will return home to Houston to continue his workouts and ramp up for the season.

Andre Reed starts coaching path with Bills: Legendary receiver Andre Reed is once again looking to make his mark with the Buffalo Bills.

The Hall of Fame wide receiver joined his former team this week as a coaching intern. As part of the Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship, Reed is one of seven coaches who will work with the team through training camp.

It’s Reed’s second opportunity as a coaching intern. He worked with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2013 but naturally feels more comfortable with his former team of 15 years.

With 951 receptions, 13,198 yards and 87 touchdowns under his belt, Reed certainly has the qualifications to lend a hand.

Deflategate football auction: A properly inflated ball from the game in which Tom Brady used underinflated footballs is up for auction.

Bidding starts at $25,000 in the auction running through July 17.

An NFL-commissioned report found that during a halftime examination, 11 of the 12 balls used by the New England Patriots offense were under the league-mandated minimum of 12.5 pounds per square inch. The balls were re-inflated for the second half against the Indianapolis Colts.

The ball being auctioned was used on a third-quarter touchdown run by LeGarrette Blount in New England’s 45-7 win over Indianapolis in the AFC championship game. He dropped it and teammate Brandon LaFell picked it up and handed it to a fan, according to Lelands, which is running the auction.

The NFL fined the Patriots $1 million and took away two draft picks. A hearing before Commissioner Roger Goodell on Brady’s appeal of his four-game suspension is scheduled for Tuesday.

PFWA honors Arians: Arizona’s Bruce Arians, the 2014 NFL Coach of the Year, has won the Jack Horrigan Award from the Professional Football Writers of America for his cooperation with the media.

Arians is the first member of the Cardinals to receive the honor. He was the league’s top coach in 2012, when he served on an interim basis while Colts head coach Chuck Pagano battled leukemia. Arians joined the Cardinals the next season. In 2014, despite a slew of injuries, he led them to an 11-5 record and an NFC wild-card berth.

Arians is lauded by beat writers who cover the Cardinals, as well as by the national media. Says Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic: “He’s honest, funny and opinionated. He recognizes, and more importantly, respects that reporters have a job to do, too. He’s not going to divulge state secrets, but he does far more than required when it comes to providing thoughtful answers and sharing his knowledge and experiences.
