The California University women’s basketball team received a pair of postseason awards and had three All-PSAC West Division selections, including two first-team honorees, when the conference’s all-star teams were announced Thursday.
Forward Seairra Barrett was named the PSAC West Freshman of the Year and head coach Jess Strom was chosen as the PSAC West Coach of the Year. Sophomore guard Miki Glenn and senior forward Emma Mahady each were selected to the West first team, while senior guard Kaitlynn Fratz was chosen to the second team. The Vulcans boasted three All-PSAC West selections for the first time since 2008-09 season. Cal was the only school in the nine-team division to feature multiple first-team selections and tied for the division lead with three overall honorees.
Glenn leads the team and ranks fifth in the league in scoring with 15.2 points per game. She is tied for first in the PSAC with 2.8 steals per game and also leads the league with 37.7 minutes played per game. The Bridgeport, W.Va., native is one of only two players in the 18-team league to play more than 1,000 minutes this season.
A three-year starter, Mahady earned All-PSAC West honors for the first time. She ranks 10th in the league in scoring with a career-high 14.0 points per game and leads the Vulcans with 5.6 rebounds per game.
Fratz averages 13.2 points per game and is among the top 10 in the PSAC with 2.0 steals and 32.9 minutes per game.
A graduate of Central Valley, Barrett is the fifth Cal player in the last 14 seasons to be named the PSAC West Freshman of the Year. She averages 7.6 points per game and is second on the team with 5.4 rebounds per game.
Strom has coached the Vulcans to a 24-4 record, including four wins over nationally-ranked opponents. Cal will play at Bloomsburg Saturday (3:30 p.m.) in the PSAC tournament semifinals.
