HERSHEY – Washington & Jefferson College junior Nick Carr became the first wrestler in school history to win a national championship Saturday when he won the 157-pound weight class at the NCAA Division III tournament at the Giant Center.

Carr, who was a second-place finisher in the tournament last year, used a pair of first-period takedowns to defeat Reece Lefever of Wabash, 5-2.

Carr, a former PIAA champion at South Fayette High School, entered the tournament as the top seed and unbeaten. He completes his junior season with a 26-0 record.

Earlier in the day, Carr, who is 39-1 in two seasons at W&J after transferring from Kent State, whipped Steven Dewitt of Loras College, 10-3, in the semifinals.

Carr is just the fourth individual national champion in any sport in school history, joining Pat Pyrch (diving, 1983), Jaimee Heffner (javelin 1997) and Kaitlyn Orstein (2004-2008, swimming). Orstein won eight titles.

Waynesburg University’s duo of Sam Guidi and Luke Lohr each gained All-America status at the tournament by finishing in the top eight in their respective weight classes.

Guidi, a For Cherry High School graduate, finished fourth at 165 pounds, while Lohr was eighth in the 149-pound bracket.
