Bowe heading to Cleveland
The Browns have snagged a No. 1 wide receiver.
Cleveland agreed to terms on a two-year contract with free agent Dwayne Bowe, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press. Bowe, who has spent the past eight seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, is expected to sign the deal on Thursday, said the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team has not confirmed the agreement.
With Cleveland, Bowe will fill the void created by former Pro Bowler Josh Gordon being suspended for at least the 2015 season for multiple violations of the NFL’s drug policy. Gordon led the league in yards receiving in 2013 and was suspended for 10 games last season. Cleveland’s offense struggled without a deep threat, and even when Gordon returned, the Browns didn’t have much of a passing game.
A big, athletic receiver, Bowe should help. He had 60 receptions for 754 yards last season but did not score a touchdown. The 6-foot-2, 221-pound Bowe led the league with 15 TDs in 2010 and has averaged 66 catches per season.
Still goes back to Bengals: Defensive tackle Devon Still has re-signed with the Cincinnati Bengals after getting good news about his 4-year-old daughter’s fight with cancer.
The Bengals offered Still a one-year deal. He waited to see how his daughter, Leah, was doing before making a decision. Results of her tests this week showed her cancer treatments are working.
Still has played in 30 games with Cincinnati during the last three seasons, including 12 last year. He also helped to raise more than $1 million for pediatric cancer research and treatment. His daughter attended a game at Paul Brown Stadium and met Lauren Hill, the Mount St. Joseph freshman basketball player who is dying from brain cancer.
The Bengals also signed free agent cornerback Brandon Ghee.
Redskins re-sign McCoy: The Washington Redskins have re-signed free-agent quarterback Colt McCoy, who started four games for the team last season.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
McCoy, 28, appeared in five games overall in his first season with the Redskins, completing 91 of 128 passes (71.7 percent) for 1,057 yards, with four touchdown passes, three interceptions and a team-high passer rating of 96.4.
Jaguars claim RB Pierce: The Jacksonville Jaguars have claimed Bernard Pierce off waivers, one day after the running back’s drunken driving charge led to his release by the Baltimore Ravens.
The Ravens moved quickly on Wednesday to cut Pierce, holding to the team’s assertion last month that off-field misbehavior would not be tolerated.
Running back Ray Rice was suspended by the NFL and released by the Ravens following his arrest last year for domestic violence. Rice was one of five Baltimore players arrested in 2014.
