Cal sweeps PSAC West softball opener

In its first action in 10 days, No. 23-ranked California University opened PSAC West Division action by sweeping a doubleheader with Slippery Rock at Lilley Field Sunday afternoon, 7-5 and 4-3.
Cal improves to 8-4 overall and extended its winning streak in PSAC West play to 40 games with their last league loss coming April 3, 2013. Slippery Rock is 1-3, 4-10.
In the opener, the Vulcans mounted a five-run fifth inning and hit a pair of home runs. Slippery Rock took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second before Cal’s Shelby Heyd lined a solo homer down the right-field line to lead off the bottom of the second. The Rock took advantage of a fielding error in the fifth to score three unearned runs with two outs to take a 5-1 lead.
Cal answered with five runs in the bottom half of the fifth on three hits, two walks, one hit by pitch and two errors. With the bases loaded, senior Breanna Morris had an RBI single and Heyd drew a bases-loaded walk. Freshman Emily Price then cleared the bases with a three-run double.
Winning pitcher Alex Sagl gave up six hits and three walks.
In the second game, Cal held a 4-1 lead entering the top of the seventh before the game ended with the potential game-tying run being thrown out at home plate.
Lindsay Reicoff hit a home run and Kaity Finley had a run-scoring double to boost Cal to a 2-0 lead. After The Rock scored an unearned run, Morris hit a two-run homer to push the Vulcans’ advantage to 4-1.
Winning pitcher Meghan Uher threw a complete game to improve her record to 4-1.
