South Fayette boys headed to WPIAL title game

Zach Ali scored a goal in the second overtime Monday to give South Fayette a 2-1 victory over South Park in the WPIAL Class AA semifinals at Canon-McMillan.

The win advances the Lions (17-3) to the championship game either Friday or Saturday against Mars (18-2-1), a 3-0 winner over Thomas Jefferson in the other semifinal.

South Fayette took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Nick Aul, who scored on a header off an assist by Zach Lutz in the 32nd minute. The game remained 1-0 until South Park’s Dan Irwin scored to tie with 23:20 remaining in regulation.

After one scoreless overtime, Ali scored the game-winner with 11:02 remaining in the second OT.

South Park is 18-2-1.

South Park 2, South Fayette 0: Jordan Minda scored two second-half goals to give South Park a 2-0 victory over South Fayette in the Class AA semifinals at Canon-McMillan.

South Park (18-2-1) will play Mars in the WPIAL title game either Friday or Saturday at Highmark Stadium. South Fayette (14-5-2) will play Central Valley in the third-place game Wednesday at a site and time to be determined. The winner advances to the PIAA tournament.

South Park and South Fayette shared the Section 5 title and split a pair of regular-season matches. In the third meeting, the teams played a scoreless first half before Minda took a pass from Katie Schultz and tallied the game’s first goal with 23:04 left in regulation.

The score remained 1-0 until Minda scored an insurance goal with only 4:03 remaining.
