Freeport passes test against McGuffey
FREEPORT – Ryan Weigold threw for 367 yards and five touchdowns – all in the first half – as Freeport defeated McGuffey, 45-6, in the opening round of the WPIAL Class AA football playoffs Friday night.
Weigold, who came into the game completing 61.5 percent of his passes, 21 touchdowns and one interception, bettered those numbers in this game, completing 22 of 25 passes without an interception for Freeport (9-1), which plays Washington next Friday at a site to be determined.
His main target was Dylan Hochbein, who caught nine passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns, as Weigold threw his scoring strikes to four different receivers.
Running back Ian Miller had one rushing score and another on a pass 10 seconds before the first half ended.
Marcus Czulewicz completed 7 of 17 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown, a 55-yard strike to Nick Haynes late in the fourth quarter. He was intercepted twice as McGuffey (6-4) turned the ball over three times and managed 180 total yards.
