Local college roundup: W&J women sink Allegheny at line
MEADVILLE – Beka Bellhy scored a game-high 22 points and Danni Medovich made five three-pointers to help Washington & Jefferson defeat Allegheny, 84-69, at the David V. Wise Center, extending its winning streak to three games.
Bellhy, a Fort Cherry graduate, grabbed seven rebounds and is averaging 20 points per game this season. Medovich had 15 points, Taylor Cortazzo added 19 and Amirah Moore chipped in 12 for the Presidents (3-1), who shot 39 percent from the field. W&J took advantage of Alleghey’s foul trouble – which included two players fouling out and 28 personal fouls – by making 22 of 37 from the free-throw line. Canon-McMillan graduate Danielle Parker had a team-high 14 rebounds for W&J.
Allegheny trailed 37-26 at the half after shooting just 26.3 percent. It pulled to within seven points early in the fourth quarter, but the Presidents made 12 of 18 free throws in the quarter to clinch the win.
The Gators (2-3) shot just 26.3 percent in the first half and had 20 turnovers in the game. They were led by Rachel Vigliotti’s 17 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.
Carnegie Mellon 82, Waynesburg 56: Jackie Hudepohl and Lisa Murphy each scored 28 points to help Carnegie Mellon defeat Waynesburg, 82-56, in a non-conference game at Skibo Gymnasium.
Murphy added seven blocks and eight rebounds, while Hudepohl at 17 rebounds for the Tartans (4-0), who had a 61-34 advantage in rebounds. The Yellow Jackets (1-3) shot just 27.7 percent from the field, including 5 of 23 from three-point range, and none of their starters reached double figures.
Waynesburg was led by Addy Knetzer’s 12 points and Kassidy O’Keefe chipped in 10.
Carnegie Mellon led just three points at the end of the first quarter, but a 10-0 run late in the second helped it build a 18-point halftime lead. The Tartans led by 31 points with under five minutes remaining in the regulation and shot 54.3 percent from the field.
Juniata 81, Washington & Jefferson 59: Juniata forced 16 turnovers and had three players in double figures as it defeated Washington & Jefferson 81-59 in a non-conference game at Henry Memorial Center.
The Eagles (4-0) were led by Kyle Koehler’s 16 points, while Dennis Fisher added 14 and Marcus Lee chipped in 10. Juniata shot 50.8 percent from the field and scored 14 points off turnovers.
The Presidents (0-4), meanwhile, shot 38.5 percent, including just 9 of 25 in the first half, but they had four players in double figures. Joe Satira had 19 points for W&J, which was outrebounded 39-29. Christian Rohaus had 14, Brian Graytok 10 and Chartiers-Houston graduate Kodie Hanley also had 10 points.
Koehler scored 13 of his 16 points in the first half to help Juniata forge a 14-point lead at the half.
