WAYNESBURG – Jerry Lawman scored on a 4-yard run with 35 seconds remaining in the game as Waynesburg rallied from a 24-14 third quarter deficit to defeat Grove City, 35-31, in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference football game Saturday.

The win was the 66th for head coach Rick Shepas at Waynesburg, making him the program’s all-time wins leader ahead of Frank Wolf, who won 65 games there. Shepas, who is in his 11th season, is now 66-43. He passed Frank N. Wolf, who posted a 65-63-1 record over two different stints with the program (1921-22, 1929-41) and presented the game ball to Kurt Detwiler, a former Yellow Jackets player who was severely injured in a car wreck this past summer.

Lawman had 142 yards on 23 carries and scored three times for the Yellow Jackets (1-2, 2-3), who broke a three-game losing streak.

His second score put Waynesburg ahead to stay and an Eli Hargis interception at midfield sealed the victory.

Jake Dougherty completed 13 of 22 passes for 175 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions for Waynesburg.

His final TD pass, a 27-yard strike to Kevin Barnes early in the fourth quarter, put the Yellow Jackets ahead, 28-24 with 11:35 remaining.

But Matt Pennypacker threw a 12-yard touchdown to Josh Peach with 8:52 left in the fourth quarter to put the Wolverines (0-2, 0-4) back on top, 31-28, setting the stage for Lawman’s game-winning score.

Pennypacker was 14 of 26 for 172 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions, while also picking up 55 yards on the ground.
