Girls soccer: Waynesburg sets up 4-AA showdown
Madison Clayton scored four goals, including two in a two-minute span and three in the match’s opening 7:27, as Waynesburg moved closer to clinching the Section 4-AA title Wednesday night with a 7-0 victory over visiting Brownsville.
The win moves first-place Waynesburg to 10-1 in the section and 11-1 overall. The Raiders have one section game remaining, Monday at second-place Belle Vernon (7-1-1, 9-4-1). A win or tie will give Waynesburg the outright section title.
Lilly Behm, Lauren Rose and Bailey Fudala each scored a goal for Waynesburg, which led 5-0 at the half. Goalkeeper Josie Evans made three saves as the Raiders won their sixth consecutive match.
• Canon-McMillan had no trouble remaining undefeated as the Big Macs cruised to a 15-0 victory over host Brashear at Cupples Stadium.
Sabrina Bryan and Allie Thomas led the way for the Big Macs (10-0, 13-0). Bryan scored three goals, and Thomas scored two goals and assisted on six others. Ashland Whipple and Aideen O’Donoghue each contributed two goals.
Lexi Finney, Ashley Oddi, Megan Virgin, Madison Whipple, Maddie Joyce and Emily Clopp each tallied one goal for C-M. Goalkeeper Elizabeth Hathaway made two saves.
Brashear is 0-10, 0-11.
• Brittany Palm and Shania Maxwell each scored goals in the first half, and the McGuffey defense and goalkeeper Katie Demi made sure they were enough as the Highlanders blanked host Elizabeth Forward 2-0 in Section 4-AA.
Demi made four saves as McGuffey improved its record to 3-5-1 in the section and 4-6-2 overall. EF slipped to 4-6, 4-8-1.
• Brenna McGuire scored a hat trick and Section 5-AA leader South Fayette remained unbeaten in league play with a 4-0 victory over Keystone Oaks at Dormont Stadium.
Goalkeeper Natalie Caraway had her ninth shutout of the season as the Lions improved to 10-0 in the section and 11-2 overall. KO fell to 0-9-1, 1-11-1.
• Mariah Vucich scored three goals and Peters Township rolled on Senior Night as the Indians defeated visiting Trinity 11-0 in Section 4-AAA.
Madaline LaVigna and Erin Helbig each scored two goals for PT (8-2, 11-2) and Reilly McGlumphy, Nicole Kittleberger, Regan LaVigna and Emily Cottrill each contributed one tally.
Trintiy’s record dipped to 2-9 in section and 3-10-1 overall.
• Section 2-A leader Charleroi scored the game’s final four goals and defeated host Serra Catholic, 5-1.
Kyra Watkins scored three goals, including one on a peanlty kick, and assisted on another goal to lead pace Charleroi (11-0-1, 12-1-1), which won its 11th match in a row. Kaitlyn Riley scored two goals, including the one that broke a 1-1 tie. Shayla Watkins contributed two assists.
Charleroi outscored Serra (7-4-1, 8-5-1) by a 26-4 margin and Cougars goalkeeper Sydney Toth made two saves.
• Bea Kossel scored two goals and Bentworth cruised to a 4-0 victory over Monessen in Section 2-A.
Miranda VanKirk and Morgan Hawley also scored goals for the Bearcats.
Bentworth, which has been alternating wins and losses for each of its last five matches, is 7-4-1 in the section and 7-6-1 overall. Monessen is 1-11, 1-11.
• South Allegheny held host Chartiers-Houston scoreless in the second half and remained in contention for the Section 2-A title by defeating the Bucs, 3-1.
Amber Brownfield scored two goals for South Allegheny (9-1-1, 10-1-1), which led 2-1 at halftime. Erin James scored the only goal for Chartiers-Houston (5-7, 5-10). Bucs goalkeeper Madison Acor had a busy night, making 17 saves.
