Boys soccer: South Fayette clinches elusive section championship

South Fayette won the Section 5-AA championship by dominating second-place Montour, 4-1, on the Lions’ home field Tuesday night.

Jordan Smith scored two goals to power the South Fayette attack. Zach Lutz and Rudy Panda also scored as South Fayette improved to 10-1 in the section and 12-2 overall. Corey Zupan and Tim Locher split time in net for the Lions.

Though South Fayette has had a strong run in soccer in recent seasons, playing in the WPIAL championship game and state semifinals, this was the first section title in recent history for the Lions.

Montour is 7-2-2 in section and 10-3-2 overall.

• Bentworth clinched a tie for first place in Section 4-A with a 6-0 victory over Geibel.

Levi Jordan had a hat trick for the Bearcats (10-1, 11-3-2). Chad Gurdish, Ben Roberts and Darius Hays each added one. Felipo Temtorin had two assists. Will Bashioum and Austin Curry combined for the shutout.

Geibel is 2-11, 2-8 in section.

• Jim Siebert scored two goals then made six saves in net to help McGuffey defeat Laurel Highlands, 4-1, in a Section 6-AA match.

The win clinched a playoff spot for the Highlanders (9-2, 9-5). Siebert is the backup goalie and switched spots when Nic Loughman couldn’t go.

Aaron Harris and Andrew Allender also had goals for McGuffey.

Laurel Highlands fell to 4-6-1, 6-8-3.

• Nick Fox recorded the shut out in a 4-0 win by Waynesburg over Uniontown in a Section 7-AA match.

John Walters, Dylan Cowell, Bo Ricci and Nate Blair each had a goal for Waynesburg (4-6-1, 4-7-2).

• Ben Johnson recorded his 10th save and Trinity clinched a playoff berth with a 3-0 victory over Brownsville in Section 6-AA.

Nick McCarrell, Corey McMurdy and Peter Rinehart each had a goal for the Hillers (6-2-2, 9-3-2).

• California moved to .500 and kept its playoff hopes alive with a 5-0 victory over Washington at Wash High Stadium.

Austin Sutch scored two goals for the Trojans, and Alex Adams, Calyton Oveson and Riley Oveson had one each.

Cal is 5-5 in Section 4-A and 6-6 overall. Wash High is 1-11, 1-12.
