Waynesburg bogged down in loss to Westminster
WAYNESBURG – Shamon Walker threw two touchdowns passes Saturday as Westminster scored 24 unanswered points and defeated Waynesburg 24-7 in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference football game at John F. Wiley Stadium.
The loss was the fifth in six games for Waynesburg (1-4, 2-5), which is off to its worst start ever under 11th-year head coach Rick Shepas and the program’s worst start since 1996, when the Yellow Jackets finished 2-7.
Waynesburg did lead for much of the first half, but Westminster (4-1, 5-2) scored a touchdown with only 19 seconds left before halftime and then outscored the Yellow Jackets 17-0 in the second half.
A 15-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Jake Dougherty to junior tight end Dan Davis gave Waynesburg a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets still held the seven-point advantage with 4:29 left in the first half, when Westminster intercepted a Dougherty pass at the Titans’ five-yard line on a fourth-and-1 play. Westminster then drove 95 yards and made it 7-7 when Walker passed four yards to Cody Alward in final minute of the first half.
Walker, who was 14 of 27 for 184 yards, connected with Jametrius Bentley on a 53-yard touchdown pass and the Titans’ Aaron Baptiste kicked a 36-yard field goal in the third quarter to give Westminster a 17-7 lead.
The Titans finished the scoring in the fourth quarter when Dominque McKinley capped a 44-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown run. The drive was set up by a 22-yard Waynesburg punt.
Westminster won despite being penalized 11 times for 188 yards.
Dougherty completed 16 of 27 passes for 144 yards with the one interception. He was sacked three times.
Jerry Lawman rushed for 134 yards on 27 carries for the Yellow Jackets.
